Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase I Awaits Inauguration with Key Infrastructure Launches
The inaugural phase of Metro Line 9, stretching from Kashigaon to Dahisar in Mumbai, is poised for a potential launch on April 3, subject to final approval from the state government. This significant development in the city's public transport network is expected to be marked by a ceremony that could also include the bhoomipujan (groundbreaking) for a Pod Taxi system in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and the commencement of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the ambitious Thane–Borivali twin tunnel project.
Metro Line 9: Trials and Safety Clearances Completed
The 4.5-kilometer elevated segment of Metro Line 9 has successfully undergone rigorous trials and secured essential safety certifications, paving the way for its operational debut. This phase encompasses four strategically located stations: Dahisar (East), Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon, which are set to enhance connectivity for the burgeoning Mira-Bhayandar region. As an extension of the existing Metro Line 7 (Dahisar–Gundavli), it will enable commuters from Mira Road to travel seamlessly to Gundavli without the need for train changes, offering a continuous route up to Andheri East. Additionally, passengers can transfer at Dahisar to Metro Line 2A for access to Andheri West, which links with DN Nagar station on Metro Line 1, facilitating onward journeys to Versova and Ghatkopar.
Golden Nest Flyover and Pod Taxi Project Updates
In parallel, the controversial Golden Nest Junction flyover, which has faced scrutiny due to lane narrowing issues, is also scheduled to open to motorists, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. Meanwhile, the Pod Taxi initiative in BKC, valued at approximately Rs 1,016 crore and structured under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, is set to span 8.8 kilometers with 38 stations. This innovative system will utilize pods designed to carry between 3 and 6 passengers, promising a modern and efficient transit solution.
Thane–Borivali Tunnel Project to Revolutionize Travel
The 11.8-kilometer Thane–Borivali twin tunnel project represents another leap forward in Mumbai's infrastructure. With the launch of TBMs, this corridor is projected to drastically reduce travel time to around 15 minutes, significantly enhancing connectivity between these key suburban areas. The project underscores the city's commitment to advancing its transport network to meet growing urban demands.
Political and Official Perspectives
The anticipated inauguration event is expected to be graced by prominent political figures, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, highlighting the project's importance in regional development. However, officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority have clarified that the April 3 date remains tentative, pending formal approval. "We have requested the date and are awaiting confirmation," stated an official, emphasizing that while preparations are underway, the schedule is not yet finalized. This caution follows earlier indications from Bhayander MLA Narendra Mehta, who shared a video suggesting the Metro line's imminent opening, sparking public interest and speculation.
