The Noida Authority has officially commenced work on a major infrastructure project designed to transform pedestrian safety and traffic flow at one of the city's busiest intersections. On Wednesday, authorities laid the foundation stone for a 530-metre-long skywalk that will run above the Sector 62 roundabout, marking a significant step toward creating a grade-separated pedestrian corridor.
A Rs 26 Crore Investment in Public Safety
With an estimated cost of Rs 26 crore, this ambitious project is specifically engineered to reduce accident risks and alleviate congestion at this critical junction. Officials have confirmed that construction is expected to be completed within 18 months, bringing much-needed relief to the area's commuters.
Innovative Design Features
The elevated skywalk will feature a unique 350-metre circular stretch that mirrors the roundabout's shape, complemented by a 180-metre straight segment. To ensure comfort in all weather conditions, the structure will be covered with an iron roof, providing protection during both heavy rainfall and extreme heat.
Accessibility has been carefully considered in the design, with four access points equipped with stairs, lifts, and escalators. These exits will conveniently connect pedestrians to Sector 62, Sector 63, and both sides along NH9, creating multiple pathways for safe crossing.
Addressing Critical Commuter Needs
This infrastructure development is poised to benefit residents across Noida and Ghaziabad, particularly those in Indirapuram and the bustling sectors 62 and 63. A recent survey revealed that more than 50,000 people cross the Sector 62–63 roundabout daily, many disembarking from buses and shared autos traveling between Meerut, Ghaziabad, Delhi, and Noida.
This substantial pedestrian movement frequently causes traffic stalls and creates chaotic conditions at the intersection. The new skywalk will enable pedestrians to cross from all directions without interrupting vehicular flow at this multi-lane junction, which experiences heavy daily footfall from office-goers, students, and commuters accessing nearby institutional, commercial, and residential hubs.
Strategic Planning Over Conventional Solutions
Interestingly, the Authority had initially considered constructing a conventional foot overbridge at this location. However, a comprehensive pedestrian movement study indicated that a linear structure would prove less effective at a roundabout characterized by multi-directional movement patterns.
The skywalk's design, with access from all sides, will allow pedestrians to disperse naturally to their destinations without stepping into traffic. This approach is expected to significantly reduce crossing time while dramatically improving safety for all commuters.
Part of Broader Infrastructure Development
Officials emphasized that this project forms an integral part of the Authority's larger plan to develop a 3.5 km model road stretching from Sector 62 to Mamura. This corridor routinely faces peak-hour bottlenecks as traffic streams in from the expressway toward dense office clusters and residential societies.
By implementing this innovative pedestrian solution, the Noida Authority aims to create a more efficient transportation ecosystem that prioritizes both vehicular movement and pedestrian safety, setting a precedent for future urban infrastructure projects in the region.
