Residents of Patnem-Colomb in Canacona have escalated their protest against a major development project in their area, citing serious concerns over the legitimacy of the road access. The local community, led by their councillor, took their grievances directly to the district administration on Friday.
Memorandum Submitted to Deputy Collector
Accompanied by Councillor Shubham Komarpant, the residents met with Deputy Collector Prataprao Naik Gaonkar. The delegation formally handed over a memorandum outlining their primary demand: a joint inspection of the existing road that leads to the site of the proposed mega project.
The core allegation put forth by the locals is that the project clearance was granted based on a controversial certification regarding the width of the access road. They argue that the actual measurements do not comply with the requirements, and the approval process was flawed.
Residents Voice Frustration and Issue Warning
During the meeting, resident Anil Faldesai expressed deep frustration, stating that the authorities have consistently turned a Nelson's eye to their legitimate concerns. This phrase underscores their belief that their pleas have been deliberately ignored.
Echoing the sentiment of urgency, another resident, Vaibhav Faldesai, issued a stern warning. He cautioned that if justice is not served and their demand for a fair inspection is not met, the administration should not hold the locals responsible for any potential deterioration in the law and order situation that may arise from the ongoing dispute.
Demand for Transparency and Official Assurance
The residents have specifically called for a transparent joint inspection to be conducted by officials from two key government departments: the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Department and the Public Works Department (PWD). They insist that local representatives must be present during this inspection to ensure fairness and accuracy.
In response to the memorandum and the concerns raised, Deputy Collector Prataprao Naik Gaonkar has provided an initial assurance. He committed to looking into the issue at the earliest possible opportunity, though the specifics of a timeline or the formation of an inspection committee were not immediately detailed.
The situation in Patnem remains tense as the community awaits concrete action from the administration, hoping for a resolution that addresses their fundamental questions about the project's approval and its impact on local infrastructure.
