Ponda's New Zonal Agriculture Office Building Nears Completion, March Inauguration Expected
The construction work on the new zonal agriculture office building in Ponda is rapidly approaching its final stages, with officials anticipating its inauguration in March. This development represents a major milestone in upgrading the agricultural infrastructure in the region, following the demolition of the old, dilapidated structure.
Project Progress and Timeline
Omkar Desai, the Ponda zonal agriculture officer, has confirmed that nearly all construction activities have been successfully completed within a span of two years. The swift progress underscores the efficiency and dedication of the teams involved in this crucial public works project.
The foundation stone for the new building was ceremoniously laid on July 25, 2023, by former agriculture minister Ravi Naik, setting the stage for the accelerated construction phase that followed.
Background and Necessity for the New Building
The need for a new office building became urgent after a portion of the old structure collapsed on June 9, 2023. This incident prompted the complete demolition of the aging building in July 2023.
The original building, constructed soon after Goa's Liberation, featured a traditional Mangalore-tile roof and had become structurally unsound over time. The timber used in its framework had deteriorated significantly, turning fragile and posing safety risks to occupants and visitors alike.
Current Operations and Future Prospects
Presently, the zonal agriculture office continues its essential functions from a temporary location at the Ponda market yard, situated approximately 3 kilometers from the original office site. This interim arrangement has ensured uninterrupted service delivery to the agricultural community during the transition period.
The completion of the new building is expected to enhance operational efficiency, provide modern facilities for staff and farmers, and serve as a symbol of renewed commitment to agricultural development in Ponda and surrounding areas.
