In a significant move to tackle traffic snarls and street encroachments, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has announced plans to construct a new commercial market complex with dedicated parking on the bustling Mahatma Gandhi Road. The decision, made public on Saturday, forms a core part of the civic body's long-term strategy to decongest one of the city's busiest stretches.
Permanent Solution After Anti-Encroachment Drive
The announcement followed a recent enforcement action where RMC officials cleared illegal shops and kiosks from an unused municipal plot. This plot, measuring 13.5 decimals and located opposite a mall, was freed from encroachments. RMC Administrator Sushant Gaurav emphasized that the objective extends beyond mere removal. The goal is to find a lasting solution where vendors are accommodated systematically, and roads are liberated for smooth traffic flow.
The proposed G+1 commercial complex is designed to provide structured vending spaces alongside parking facilities. Officials believe this dual-purpose infrastructure will significantly improve pedestrian movement and vehicular flow on MG Road, addressing a perennial pain point for commuters.
Coordinated Approach: Doranda Bazar Also in Focus
As part of a broader urban planning exercise, Administrator Gaurav also conducted inspections at Doranda Bazar alongside senior officials. The team assessed persistent encroachments on government land and traffic bottlenecks around key points like the Doranda police station, Jhanda Chowk, and adjoining connecting roads.
Following this assessment, the RMC has decided to develop a G+2 roadside vendor market at Doranda. This project aims to rehabilitate displaced vendors while clearing crucial road corridors. The plan includes a designated parking area and a phased enforcement strategy to ensure turning points and junctions remain free of illegal structures.
A Balanced Strategy for Urban Management
RMC officials stated that both the MG Road market complex and the Doranda redevelopment are components of a coordinated approach. The strategy seeks to protect municipal land from future encroachments while balancing strict enforcement with the creation of planned urban infrastructure. The twin initiatives represent a shift from temporary clearance drives to providing organized, permanent alternatives for street vendors, ultimately aiming for cleaner, less congested city roads.
