Byculla Construction Site Tragedy Claims Two Lives
A tragic incident unfolded in the heart of Mumbai on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the death of two construction workers and injuries to three others. The accident occurred when a large portion of soil suddenly collapsed upon the labourers at a building site in Byculla.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that the mishap took place at 2:41 PM at Habib mansion, located on Tank Pakadi Road in Byculla west. The workers were engaged in foundation and piling work for a redevelopment project when the earth gave way.
Rescue Efforts and Victim Details
Following the collapse, fellow labourers present at the site rushed to help their colleagues. At least five injured individuals were quickly transported to the civic-run Nair Hospital for emergency medical attention.
Tragically, two of the workers were declared 'brought dead' upon arrival at the hospital. The deceased have been identified as Rahul (30) and Raju (28). The three injured labourers are Sajjad Ali (25), Sobat Ali (28), and Lal Mohammad (18). Hospital officials have reported that the condition of the three survivors is now stable.
Official Response and Investigation
The BMC's E-ward acted swiftly in response to the incident, issuing a stop-work notice to the developer, identified as Ibrahim Jusub Supariwala. The notice explicitly cited unauthorized deep excavation and backfilling work conducted without any safety precautions.
A senior BMC official stated that while the developer had received initial permissions from the civic building proposal department, the excavation work was carried out without adequate safety measures. The ward office has also directed the Agripada police station to remove all workers from the site to prevent any further construction activity.
Police authorities have confirmed that they will be registering an offence in the matter and are currently investigating the exact cause of the collapse. Simultaneously, officials from the BMC's building proposal department are scheduled to visit the site to conduct a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that led to this fatal accident.
