Trichy's ₹53 Crore Cauvery Riverfront Project Gets Green Light

Trichy Corporation Launches Ambitious ₹53 Crore Cauvery Riverfront Development

The Trichy Corporation has successfully secured funding worth ₹53 crore to develop its first-ever riverfront project along the banks of the Cauvery River. This landmark initiative will transform a 2.2-kilometer stretch of the riverbank, covering both southern and northern banks in two distinct phases at Odathurai and Srirangam.

Funding Structure and Project Timeline

The project is being financed through a strategic combination of the corporation's own resources, German funding from KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau), and grants from the Union government. With tenders already floated, the civic body anticipates issuing the work order before the announcement of the 2026 Assembly elections. The entire construction period is expected to span approximately two years.

Detailed Phase-wise Development Plans

According to the government-approved Detailed Project Report (DPR), the project has been meticulously planned in two phases:

Phase I: Odathurai Recreational Zone

This phase will develop a 1.5-kilometer stretch on the south bank of the Cauvery, located between the railway tracks on Odathurai Road and the river bridge on the Trichy–Chennai National Highway. The area will be transformed into a vibrant recreational zone featuring:

  • Walking tracks for pedestrians and fitness enthusiasts
  • Designated play areas for children
  • Landscaped green spaces for relaxation
  • A 9-meter watchtower offering panoramic river views

Phase II: Srirangam Devotional Focus

Covering 0.7 kilometers on the north bank between Amma Mandapam ghat and Geethapuram ghat, this phase will primarily cater to devotees visiting the Cauvery River and the historic Srirangam temple. Key features include:

  • Basic amenities to support ritual activities
  • Pollution reduction measures along the riverbank
  • An amphitheater for cultural events
  • Dense plantation of native tree species to enhance green cover

Maintenance and Environmental Considerations

The project includes a substantial allocation of ₹2.3 crore specifically for appointing a specialized agency to maintain all facilities for five years post-construction. The revised design places increased emphasis on green cover and environmental sustainability.

During the design stage, officials consulted extensively with the water resources department, utilizing historical flood-level data to minimize potential damage during heavy flows in the Cauvery River. This proactive approach ensures the project's resilience against natural challenges.

Additional Infrastructure Development

In a related development, the Trichy Corporation has separately obtained ₹31.3 crore to redevelop the bunds of the Kottapattu tank, located on the Trichy–Pudukottai National Highway near the international airport. This project includes:

  • Walking tracks for public use
  • Installation of streetlights for safety
  • Bund-strengthening works for improved water management

An additional ₹2.3 crore has been earmarked for five years of maintenance through a private agency, ensuring long-term sustainability of this infrastructure enhancement.

These comprehensive development initiatives represent significant steps toward improving urban infrastructure, enhancing public spaces, and promoting environmental conservation in the Trichy region.
