The city of Nawabs is all set to receive a stunning new urban landmark, as the Uttar Pradesh government has given its official approval for the construction of a dedicated pedestrian bridge spanning the Gomti River. This ambitious project, themed "Smile, you are in Lucknow", promises to transform the riverfront experience for residents and visitors alike.
Design and Development of the Iconic Structure
The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) is spearheading the project, which carries an estimated cost of Rs 54 crore. To ensure a unique and iconic design, the LDA took the innovative step of organising a national-level architectural design competition. This contest drew entries from approximately 25 firms from across India. After a rigorous evaluation by an expert panel, the design submitted by Mumbai-based RVamp Studio was selected for execution.
LDA Vice-Chairperson Prathamesh Kumar stated that the bridge would be developed exclusively for walkers and is being designed on the lines of the famous Atal Bridge in Ahmedabad. The primary objective is to enhance pedestrian connectivity while simultaneously gifting Lucknow a distinctive visual identity along its cherished riverfront.
Key Specifications and Construction Timeline
The bridge will be an impressive 180 meters long across the main span over the Gomti. However, the total length of the entire structure, which includes access ramps and platforms on both banks, will extend to roughly 380 meters. It will be 12 meters wide, providing ample space for comfortable pedestrian movement. The structure will be supported by 13 docks.
Notably, the design incorporates wider span plate girders measuring 30m and 40m, which will function as dedicated viewing decks. These decks will allow people to pause, relax, and soak in picturesque views of the Gomti and the developing riverfront. In terms of materials, the bridge will feature steel tubular sections along its edges. The walking surface will be finished with a combination of stamped concrete, GRC panels, granite, and ACP panels, ensuring both durability and aesthetic appeal.
The government has already released Rs 18.90 crore as the first instalment, clearing the path for construction to commence. The entire project is scheduled to be completed within a tight timeframe of 18 months.
Enhancing Night Aesthetics and Riverfront Connectivity
The bridge's "smile" theme will be accentuated after dark through a comprehensive lighting plan. It will be equipped with streetlights, bollard lights, and integrated floor lighting. This will ensure excellent illumination for safety and security at night while artistically highlighting the bridge's cheerful design concept.
Located near the ADCP office, the new bridge will seamlessly connect both banks of the Gomti riverfront. This development is expected to significantly improve foot traffic and accessibility in the area, promoting a more vibrant and pedestrian-friendly urban space. The project marks a significant step in Lucknow's infrastructure development, aiming to blend functionality with iconic design to create a lasting legacy for the city.
