India's defence ecosystem is now heavily reliant on private startups, according to Agnishwar Jayaprakash, CEO of Garuda Aerospace. In a recent statement, he highlighted the growing role of innovative companies in bolstering the country's defence capabilities.
Shift Towards Private Sector
Jayaprakash emphasized that the traditional dependence on public sector undertakings is giving way to a more inclusive approach. Startups are now contributing significantly to research, development, and production of defence equipment. This shift aligns with the government's vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India).
Key Contributions of Startups
Private startups bring agility, cutting-edge technology, and cost-effectiveness to the defence sector. They are involved in developing drones, surveillance systems, and other advanced solutions. Garuda Aerospace itself has been a frontrunner in supplying drones for military and paramilitary applications.
- Innovation: Startups are pioneering new technologies like artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.
- Manufacturing: They are setting up local production lines, reducing import dependency.
- Collaboration: Partnerships with DRDO and armed forces are accelerating project timelines.
Government Support
The government has introduced policies to encourage startups, including easier licensing and funding opportunities. The Defence Acquisition Procedure now includes provisions for startups, and the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative fosters innovation.
Challenges and Way Forward
Despite progress, startups face hurdles such as complex regulations and long procurement cycles. Jayaprakash called for streamlined processes and more flexible contracts. He believes that with continued support, the private sector can transform India's defence landscape.
The CEO concluded that the integration of startups is not just beneficial but essential for national security. As India modernizes its armed forces, the private sector will play a pivotal role in achieving strategic autonomy.
