The ITBT department of the Karnataka government, under its flagship Local Economy Accelerator Programme (LEAP), is setting up the K-Combinator Startup Accelerator at WrkWrk in Mangaluru. This initiative is in collaboration with TiE-Mangaluru and involves an investment of over Rs 9.5 crore. According to Minister of Home, E-Governance, Electronics, IT & BT Priyank Kharge, this move is a significant step towards strengthening the emerging Udupi-Mangaluru startup cluster.
Focus on High-Potential Startups
In a post on X, Kharge explained that the accelerator will identify high-potential startups at the proof-of-concept and MVP stages. It will help them scale through structured mentorship, market access, industry linkages, and funding support. The initiative also aims to foster stronger collaboration between industry and academia while nurturing globally competitive startups and cutting-edge R&D from the region.
Boosting the 'Silicon Beach' Reputation
With its growing IT/ITeS base and strong innovation ecosystem, the K-Combinator Startup Accelerator is expected to further strengthen the Mangaluru cluster’s reputation as the 'Silicon Beach of India'. This marks another significant step in Karnataka’s innovation ecosystem.
Reacting to this development, Rohith Bhat, founding president of TiE Mangaluru, stated that accelerators should be operated by industry bodies like TiE Mangaluru. These bodies are run by individuals who have started, scaled, and exited companies. They understand what it takes to accelerate the growth of high-potential, high-growth startups and can improve the chances of success for other aspiring startups.
TiE Mangaluru's Vibrant Community
Bhat added that TiE Mangaluru is now a very vibrant community of over 150 startup founders or professional CEOs. Collectively, they employ more than 20,000 people in the region, have delivered three $100 million-plus exits, and have helped create jobs and innovation beyond Bengaluru. Initiatives like K-Combinator at the Silicon Beach help deliver on the promise of building one of the most vibrant startup ecosystems in the long run.
