Seema Bansal had no job when she first thought about launching a packaging business. She lacked any financial support. Her journey began at a small desk inside her own home. She managed every single task by herself during those early days.
Wearing Every Hat in the Business
Seema became the driver, the salesperson, the accountant, and the manager. She performed all the odd jobs necessary to keep her fledgling company operational. A Childhood Forged in Adversity
Seema's personal story is one of profound hardship. "I lost my father when I was just one and a half years old," she recalls. "We faced such extreme poverty that my mother lacked the funds for my father's last rites. She sold our ceiling fan for ₹170 and used that money to cremate him."
Born and raised in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Seema's journey is deeply inspirational. After her father's death, her mother raised four children completely alone. She gave music lessons and managed to enroll all four children in an English-medium school. However, rising education costs in higher grades became unmanageable. She had to move Seema to a government school.
Overcoming Educational Hurdles
The switch in the language of instruction was total. Seema found herself without friends and did not attend school for half a year. When she finally returned, she excelled, topping her entire class.
"My mother's relentless struggle against adversity taught me a vital lesson," Seema explains. "You can face anything life throws at you with tenacity, grit, and determination. I began giving tuitions in Class 8 to help support her. That experience showed me that sharing knowledge only increases your own understanding. Those tuitions funded my further education."
After graduation, she pursued professional courses and took competitive exams. She was selected as an air hostess, but during the Mumbai interview, she was asked for a ₹3 lakh payment. "My mother did not even have ₹300, so it was simply impossible," she states.
The Struggle in Mumbai and a London Breakthrough
With few opportunities in Gwalior, Seema and her brother moved to Mumbai. They hoped to stay with her mother's sister but were asked to leave and find work. They lived in a small tin shack that turned unbearably hot during summer months.
Seema took on several odd jobs before finally securing a position at an IT company. This proved to be her major breakthrough. The company offered her an opportunity to work in their London office, which she accepted immediately.
"I worked there for several years, met my husband, Mr. Bansal, and we got married. Life seemed settled," she says. Her husband later moved to the United States and established an office on Wall Street, inside the Empire State Building. The business flourished. They leased a three-floor office, secured jobs with Bank of America, and received a green card.
Facing a Major Setback
"But when everything seems perfect, you must prepare for setbacks," Seema reflects. Her husband suffered a massive business loss. They lost everything and returned to India, staying with her husband's younger brother. Her husband invested in another company, while Seema remained without a job.
"In London, a packaging catalogue used to arrive at our home every month. We often discussed starting a packaging business someday. Perhaps we were manifesting it. I had no experience in the packaging industry, which is almost entirely male-dominated," she notes.
Building DCG Packs from the Ground Up
Seema launched DCG Packs. She created a website and began operating from her home. Once again, she was the driver, salesperson, accountant, and receptionist. Her computer stayed on constantly as she managed everything and guided customers personally.
"I believe service is the only thing that truly propels a business forward," Seema asserts. "We customized packaging and focused on MSME clients. Whenever an order was placed, we guaranteed delivery within 24 hours in the Delhi-NCR region."
Their first customer was a big brand that placed an order for 4,000 packages. Gradually, orders increased. They invested in marketing, hired freelancers, recruited staff, and slowly built departments and platforms. Over time, they opened warehouses.
Navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic
Blinkit became their largest customer. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Everything shut down, but DCG Tech grew even during this crisis. They began supplying packaging across India to hospitals, thermometer suppliers, and emergency services. They obtained special passes for essential deliveries.
"We did not fire a single person," Seema emphasizes. "We temporarily reduced salaries but later repaid the full amount to our employees."
Expansion and a Philosophy of Growth
Today, the company has expanded to Bengaluru, Dubai, and Mumbai, in addition to Delhi. "How did this happen? Not overnight," Seema says. "Growth is not just a number. It is a mindset. It involves thinking of new ideas, innovating constantly, and experimenting fearlessly."
Forty percent of their workforce comprises women, a point of great pride for Seema. "I am proud to support them. Employee happiness is crucial. If your employees are not happy, you cannot connect with your customers," she concludes.
