Haveri: The Haveri district, traditionally known as the 'land of cardamom fragrance', is now buzzing with discussions about its potential to become the 'land of gold mines'. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has indicated the possible presence of gold and other mineral deposits at several locations after gathering preliminary geological surface data.
The agency has initiated efforts to explore gold reserves through authorized firms. Using satellite imagery and related assessments, GSI has identified five zones in Haveri district with potential mineral deposits. Detailed exploration is underway, deploying aircraft-mounted equipment to detect and assess subsurface reserves.
“A GSI team, working under the Union ministry of mines, will continue surveying various parts of Haveri and neighboring districts for mineral resources until July 2026,” sources said.
In 2024, gold exploration was conducted across the district. A report by Mining Tech Consultancy Services indicated possible deposits in areas such as Chinnikatti and Chinnamulagund, along with several other villages. In 2026, a fresh phase of exploration has begun. Deposits are suspected in Nagavanda in Rattihalli taluk, Kakol in Ranebennur taluk, Chinnikatti in Byadgi taluk, Salu Gudda (located 2 km from Bisalahalli), and Sankrikoppa in Hangal taluk.
“Gold exploration has been carried out in Haveri district several times in the past. However, at that time, gold prices were much lower. Mining would begin only if there was a certainty of finding at least 4 grams of gold per tonne of rock. Now, with prices soaring, even deposits of 1–2 grams per tonne are considered viable,” said an official from the Department of Mines and Geology.
“At first glance, deposits appear likely in Nagavanda, Kakol, Chinnikatti, Salu Gudda, and Sankrikoppa. A preliminary survey is in progress. If encouraging indicators emerge, the next step will be test excavation at the identified sites. Mining will begin only if these tests confirm the presence of gold,” the official added.
“The process is carried out in stages known as G-1, G-2, G-3, and G-4. Certain companies are awarded contracts to carry out exploration, subject to approval by the Union ministry of mines,” another official explained.
