Noida's Botanical Garden Sees Major 490-Crore Transformation, Entry Closed Until 2026
The Botanical Garden located in Noida's Sector 38A is currently undergoing a comprehensive and extensive renovation project that officials estimate will require approximately two more years to complete. For the time being, prominent signboards have been installed on the garden's green gates, clearly prohibiting entry to all visitors as the substantial upgrade work progresses.
Official Statement and Timeline
Scientist-in-charge Sandeep Chauhan provided detailed clarification regarding the closure, stating, "The visitors' entry was closed in January last year and will remain so until the upgradation work is done." This indicates that the garden has been inaccessible to the public since early last year, with the prohibition expected to continue until the renovation reaches completion around 2026.
Comprehensive Development Plan
The ambitious revamp is being executed under a substantial 490-crore plan that aims to transform the botanical garden into a world-class conservation and educational facility. The development strategy includes creating distinct zones categorized according to various forest types, specifically tropical, subtropical, and tropical moist environments.
New additions and features planned for the garden include:
- Trellis garden for climbing plants and structured displays
- Discovery garden designed for educational exploration
- Specialized bonsai section featuring miniature trees
- Curious plant section with unusual and unique botanical specimens
- Garden of senses focusing on aromatic and tactile experiences
- Aquatic garden showcasing water plants and ecosystems
- Dedicated areas for cacti, succulents, palms, and wild edible fruits and vegetables
Infrastructure and Conservation Enhancements
Beyond the botanical displays, the authorities plan to construct an administrative building to facilitate garden management and operations. Additionally, an interpretation centre will be developed to serve as an educational hub for visitors, providing detailed information about the garden's collections and conservation efforts.
The primary objective of this extensive renovation is to elevate the Botanical Garden to international standards as a conservation site, while simultaneously enhancing its role in environmental education and research initiatives.
Historical Significance and Current Collection
Originally established in 2002 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Botanic Garden of Indian Republic—commonly known simply as Botanical Garden—spans an impressive 164.85 acres. Since its inception, it has functioned as a crucial nodal centre for conservation research and environmental education programs.
The garden maintains a comprehensive herbarium and currently houses an extensive collection of botanical specimens. This includes over 1,500 specimens of flowering plants (angiosperms), along with diverse varieties of trees, herbs, and shrubs collected from different regions across India, representing the country's rich botanical diversity.
The ongoing transformation represents a significant investment in Noida's green infrastructure and environmental conservation capabilities, positioning the garden as a future destination for both scientific research and public education about India's botanical heritage.
