Sensex Surges 1,695 Points, Nifty Above 23,600 on Peace Hopes

Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp rally on Friday, driven by growing hopes of a peace deal between the United States and Iran. The BSE Sensex surged 1,695 points to close at 75,527.95, while the Nifty50 climbed 461 points to 22,622.90, reclaiming the key 23,600 mark. Investor wealth increased by over Rs 10 lakh crore, with gains across sectors and mid- and small-cap indices rising nearly 2%.

FIR Against Mamata Banerjee

An FIR has been registered against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee over an alleged provocative speech delivered at a rally in Kolkata. The case, filed on June 7, invokes sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to provocation and public disorder. The investigation is currently underway.

US-Iran Deal Talks Intensify

Negotiations between the United States and Iran are progressing, with Geneva being floated as a possible venue for signing an agreement as early as Sunday. However, Iranian state media has reported that Tehran will not relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz under any draft deal. Iran also insists on retaining its right to enrich uranium. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he is in “full agreement” with Donald Trump on preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

First Anniversary of Air India AI-171 Crash

India observed the first anniversary of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash, with Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu paying tribute to the victims. He stated that the investigation is continuing with “diligence and professionalism.” The London-bound Boeing 787 crashed near Ahmedabad on June 12 last year, killing 260 people, including passengers, crew, and individuals on the ground. Only one survivor was reported.

Kane Williamson Retires from International Cricket

New Zealand’s star batter Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, concluding a 16-year career. He played 378 matches across all formats, including 110 Tests, 175 One-Day Internationals, and 93 T20 Internationals. His final appearance was in the first Test against England at Lord’s, after which he opted out of the remainder of the series.
