Ahmedabad Airport Prepares Major Terminal Shift for 2030 Commonwealth Games

Ahmedabad's SVPI Airport is moving its GujSAIL terminal to a new location. This relocation aims to create space for a large expansion project before the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The airport needs more capacity to handle increased passenger traffic expected during the international sporting event.

New Terminal Location Finalized Opposite T1

Sources confirm the proposed new site sits directly opposite Terminal 1. It currently houses a state-operated terminal facility. The approval process for this move has reached its final stages. Authorities considered another potential location at the GSEC terminal in Meghaninagar. However, they are no longer actively pursuing that option.

The Airports Authority of India has already earmarked the land for this relocation. They granted in-principle approval for the project. Detailed coordination between airport operators and state authorities continues actively. This careful planning ensures minimal disruption to current airport operations.

Integrated Terminal Building to Double Capacity

This terminal relocation forms part of a larger expansion plan. The airport will construct a new integrated terminal building. This NITB will combine domestic and international operations under one roof. The design promises to reduce aircraft turnaround time significantly.

Passengers will experience improved flow through enhanced check-in areas. Additional security lanes will speed up processing. More aerobridges will connect planes directly to the terminal. Expanded retail spaces and lounge areas will provide better amenities.

Officials project the new terminal will nearly double the airport's annual handling capacity. It should reach 2 crore passengers over the next decade. This compares to the current capacity of 1.2 crore passengers in FY25.

Fast-Tracked Expansion for Global Events

People familiar with the development say authorities are fast-tracking this expansion. They need to align with infrastructure timelines required for hosting large international events. The 2030 Commonwealth Games represent a major catalyst for these improvements.

"The aim is to build capacity ahead of demand," explained one source. "SVPI needs to function as a global gateway when international sporting events bring in large volumes of travellers."

Additional Relocations Support Master Plan

In mid-July, the SVPI airport operator proposed relocating two more facilities. They plan to move the air traffic control building and the general aviation terminal. Their current locations limit the scope for creating a single, contiguous terminal complex.

Once the new integrated terminal becomes operational, workers will dismantle the existing GujSAIL structure. This demolition will free up valuable land for further airside and terminal expansion. The phased redevelopment approach ensures ongoing operations continue smoothly throughout construction.

This comprehensive airport upgrade positions Ahmedabad as a major transportation hub. It prepares the city to welcome athletes and visitors from across the Commonwealth in 2030.
