Air India Expands Operations with 78 Additional Flights Amid West Asia Turmoil

In a strategic move to address the ongoing travel disruptions caused by the Israel-Iran conflict, Air India has announced the operation of 78 extra flights between March 10 and 18. This initiative aims to provide reliable connectivity for passengers traveling between India and key international destinations, particularly in Europe and North America.

Enhanced Flight Schedules to Major Hubs

The additional flights will primarily serve routes from Delhi to New York, London (Heathrow), Frankfurt, Paris (CDG), Amsterdam, Zurich, Malé, and Colombo. Mumbai will also see increased services to London. This expansion comes as Gulf carriers, including Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways, which typically handle a significant volume of transit passengers between India and the rest of the world, are currently unavailable due to safety concerns and operational challenges stemming from the West Asia situation.

Nipun Aggarwal, Air India's chief commercial officer, emphasized the airline's commitment to maintaining scheduled services despite the odds. "Despite the odds, Air India continues to maintain its scheduled services to Europe and North America, sustaining connectivity to several international gateways using alternative routings that are assessed as safe for operations. We are confident that passengers in need to travel to destinations in these regions will appreciate the additional options and reliability with Air India," he stated.

Response to Soaring Demand and Skyrocketing Fares

The decision to add these flights is a direct response to sustained high demand for reliable travel options amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Since the Israel-Iran war broke out on February 28, international airfares have surged dramatically, with stranded passengers reporting one-way fares to Europe reaching as high as Rs 2-4 lakh. This has created an urgent need for more affordable and accessible travel alternatives.

The extra flights will add a total of 17,660 seats across nine routes in both directions, providing much-needed relief to travelers. Air India plans to utilize a mix of aircraft for these operations:

  • Boeing 787-8 aircraft for European routes.
  • Airbus A320neo aircraft for flights to Malé and Colombo.
  • Boeing 777-300ER aircraft for services to New York (JFK), subject to regulatory approvals.

Strategic Implications and Passenger Benefits

This expansion not only helps mitigate the impact of the Gulf carrier disruptions but also positions Air India as a key player in maintaining global connectivity during times of geopolitical instability. By offering additional flights, the airline aims to enhance its reliability and provide passengers with more options, potentially stabilizing fares in the competitive international travel market.

As the situation in West Asia continues to evolve, Air India's proactive measures underscore its dedication to customer service and operational resilience. Travelers are advised to check for updates and book early to take advantage of these new flight options, which are expected to ease the burden on those affected by the ongoing conflict.
