Air India Consolidates All Ahmedabad Operations at Terminal 2 Starting March 29
In a significant operational shift, Air India will move all its domestic flight services from Terminal 1 (T1) to Terminal 2 (T2) at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad, effective March 29. This strategic consolidation will bring the airline's entire domestic and international operations under one roof at the modern Terminal 2 facility.
Streamlining Passenger Experience Ahead of Summer Travel
The timing of this transition is particularly strategic, coinciding with the onset of the busy summer travel season. By consolidating operations, Air India aims to streamline passenger movement and significantly enhance the overall airport experience for travelers. The move covers approximately 210 weekly domestic flights to and from Ahmedabad, marking a complete shift of the airline's domestic footprint at SVPIA.
Air India's international services have been operating from Terminal 2 for some time. From the effective date of March 29, all arrivals and departures of domestic flights will be handled exclusively from this integrated terminal, creating a unified operational hub.
Terminal 2 Infrastructure Advantages
Terminal 2, which spans approximately 49,000 square meters, offers substantial infrastructure benefits that support this consolidation. The facility features:
- 52 check-in counters for efficient passenger processing
- Modern self-baggage drop facilities to reduce wait times
- Convenient DigiYatra kiosks for seamless digital travel
- Enhanced immigration capacity to handle increased passenger flow
- Expanded retail and dining options for traveler convenience
Airport Optimization and Future Plans
Airport sources have indicated that this move by Air India may be part of a broader strategy to optimize terminal usage at SVPIA. There are discussions about potentially shifting operations of other airlines to Terminal 2 as well, particularly to make optimal use of the new integrated terminal during daytime hours.
Currently, as an international terminal, Terminal 2 experiences the majority of its departures and arrivals during nighttime operations. The addition of Air India's domestic flights will help balance terminal utilization throughout the day, improving overall airport efficiency.
Passenger Communication and Advisory
Air India has proactively begun notifying affected passengers about this significant operational change. The airline is sending SMS alerts and email notifications to travelers with upcoming bookings to ensure they are aware of the terminal shift.
The airline strongly advises all passengers to verify their terminal details before departure to avoid any last-minute inconvenience or confusion. This is particularly important for travelers who may be accustomed to using Terminal 1 for domestic flights and need to adjust their airport arrival plans accordingly.
This consolidation represents Air India's commitment to operational efficiency and passenger convenience at one of India's key aviation hubs. By bringing all services together at Terminal 2, the airline positions itself to better serve the growing travel demand in the Ahmedabad region while leveraging the superior facilities of the newer terminal infrastructure.
