Pilot Offloaded After Failing Breathalyser Test
The event unfolded at Vancouver International Airport. Before the scheduled departure of flight AI186, Canadian authorities flagged the pilot for a potential violation. The cockpit crew member was subjected to a breathalyser test, which he failed. In adherence to strict safety protocols, the pilot was immediately offloaded from the aircraft.
An Air India spokesperson confirmed the sequence of events. "Canadian authorities had flagged the issue, after which the pilot was taken for further inquiry," the statement read. The airline swiftly arranged for an alternate pilot to operate the flight, which was the primary cause of the delay. Air India apologized for the inconvenience caused to its passengers.
Airline's Response and Ongoing Investigation
Air India has taken immediate internal action following the serious safety breach. The airline confirmed that the pilot has been taken off all flying duties pending the outcome of the investigation. The carrier reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards such violations.
"Pending the outcome of the investigation, any confirmed violation will attract strict disciplinary action in line with company policy," the airline's statement emphasized. Formal Notice from Transport Canada
The regulatory body, Transport Canada, formally informed Air India about the violation. In a letter dated December 24, it stated that the pilot's actions amounted to a breach of Canadian aviation regulations and the conditions of Air India's foreign air operator certificate.
Transport Canada has mandated Air India to conduct a detailed investigation under its own Safety Management System (SMS). The airline must submit a comprehensive report on the corrective measures it has taken by January 26, 2026. The Canadian authorities have also indicated that separate enforcement action could be pursued against the airline.
