Assam Makes Historic Export of GI-Tagged Joha Rice to European Markets
In a landmark development for agricultural exports, the state of Assam has successfully shipped its first consignment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Joha rice to the United Kingdom and Italy. This significant move was officially flagged off from Guwahati on Thursday, representing a strategic effort to promote Assam's premium agricultural products on the global stage.
Strategic Collaboration and Market Expansion
The export initiative has been meticulously facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), operating under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. APEDA has worked in close collaboration with the Assam state agriculture department to execute this project. The consignment, weighing 25 metric tonnes, is part of APEDA's broader strategy to promote GI-tagged products by establishing direct market linkages between producer groups and international buyers.
This export marks a substantial expansion of Joha rice's market reach. Previously, this aromatic indigenous variety had been exported to Vietnam and five West Asian countries: Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. Reports indicate that a one-metric-tonne consignment was sent to Vietnam, while each of the five West Asian nations received two metric tonnes respectively.
Official Statements and Farmer Benefits
Assam's Agriculture Minister, Atul Bora, who personally flagged off the shipment from Guwahati, emphasized the importance of this development. "Joha rice is highly valued for its distinct fragrance, fine grain texture, and rich taste," Bora stated. "With rising global interest in traditional and healthy grains, Joha rice is gaining recognition in premium domestic and international markets."
Bora further highlighted that this first large shipment to the UK and Italy demonstrates Assam's capability to meet stringent international quality standards. "This export increases the global visibility of Joha rice and will directly benefit our farmers by opening new revenue streams," he added, underscoring the economic implications for local agricultural communities.
Logistics and Future Prospects
The logistical plan for the consignment involves transportation by road to Kolkata, followed by shipment to Europe. The flag-off ceremony was attended by officials from the state agriculture department and APEDA, reflecting the collaborative nature of this export initiative.
Joha rice, which received its GI tag in 2017, is an indigenous variety cultivated exclusively in Assam. The GI certification authenticates its unique geographical origin and traditional production methods, adding significant value in international markets where consumers increasingly seek authentic and traceable food products.
This export breakthrough is expected to pave the way for further international trade opportunities for Assam's agricultural sector, potentially including other GI-tagged products. It represents a successful model of how strategic government intervention, quality certification, and market linkage can enhance the global footprint of regional agricultural specialties.
