Bengaluru-Mumbai Rail Crisis: Only One Special Train Announced for Holi Rush

As the Holi festival approaches, travel demand between Bengaluru and Mumbai has surged dramatically, yet hundreds of passengers are left waiting for a reliable rail option. The South Western Railway (SWR) has announced only a one-time special train so far, despite repeated demands from passenger groups for a daily superfast service connecting the two major cities.

Limited Relief During Peak Festive Season

The special train, scheduled to depart on Sunday evening, will be a non-air-conditioned express, offering minimal relief during the peak festive rush. This allocation has sparked criticism from commuters who expected more robust alternatives to handle the increased travel volume.

Train Schedule and Stops: The train will leave Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru near Byappanahalli at 7:30 PM on Sunday. It is expected to reach Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Mumbai at 11:30 PM the following day, covering the journey in 28 hours and 30 minutes. The relatively long travel time has drawn further criticism from passengers anticipating a faster option.

Delayed Bi-Weekly Express Service

More than three months ago, the railway board notified a bi-weekly express service between Bengaluru and Mumbai in response to sustained passenger demand. Although the proposed service faced criticism for its limited frequency and slower schedule compared to expectations, it was seen as a much-needed alternative to the heavily relied-upon Udyan Express. However, this service has yet to be operationalized, adding to passenger frustrations.

Senior SWR officials have maintained that the bi-weekly train has not been cancelled and will be introduced once timetable coordination between railway zones is finalized. "The service will be flagged off soon," a senior official stated, adding that additional special trains could be considered depending on passenger demand and platform availability in both cities.

The ongoing delay highlights the challenges in meeting the growing travel needs during festive periods, with passengers continuing to seek more efficient and frequent rail connections between these key metropolitan hubs.
