Bengaluru's Short-Distance Trains Get Modern LHB Coaches for Enhanced Comfort
Bengaluru Trains Upgraded to Modern LHB Coaches for Better Travel

Bengaluru's Railway Network Embraces Modernization with LHB Coaches

In a significant upgrade to urban rail travel, South Western Railway (SWR) has phased out the iconic beige and brown coaches that once defined Bengaluru's short-distance trains. This week, five key routes have been transitioned to modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) rakes, marking a leap forward in passenger amenities and operational efficiency.

Enhanced Comfort and Safety Features

The newly introduced LHB coaches are stainless steel passenger carriages originally developed in Germany and now manufactured domestically by Indian Railways. Designed to operate at speeds of up to 160–180 kmph, these coaches prioritize enhanced safety through advanced engineering and improved passenger comfort with modern accessories.

Key upgrades include:

  • Convenient charging points for electronic devices
  • Integrated tray tables for meals and work
  • Modular cabin switches for better control
  • Air-conditioned environments with modular window blinds
  • Sliding window shutters replacing outdated clip-based systems

Routes Benefiting from the Upgrade

The modernization initiative impacts several popular short-distance trains:

  1. Three Mysuru-bound services
  2. One train to Dharwad
  3. The intercity express to Talguppa, the nearest station to Jog Falls

These upgrades aim to provide a more comfortable journey for daily commuters and tourists alike, though the total number of coaches per train has been reduced from 21 to 19. The current configuration includes 11 general coaches, 5 reserved second-sitting coaches, and an air-conditioned chair car.

Passenger Feedback and Concerns

While many travelers welcome the modern amenities, some have expressed reservations about the design of the second-sitting coaches. These feature chairs with limited incline, which may affect comfort during longer journeys. Railway officials are monitoring feedback to address such concerns in future iterations.

New Memu Train Approved for Arsikere Route

In related developments, Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna announced the approval of a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (Memu) train between Bengaluru and Arsikere via Tumakuru. This service is expected to significantly benefit students, daily-wage workers, employees, farmers, and traders by improving connectivity and supporting the local economy.

"This train will enhance daily commuting options and boost regional economic activities," Somanna stated, highlighting the government's commitment to expanding and modernizing rail infrastructure in Karnataka.

The transition to LHB coaches represents a broader shift toward sustainable and passenger-friendly rail travel in Bengaluru, aligning with national efforts to upgrade India's railway network. As these modern trains become operational, they promise to redefine short-distance travel with a focus on safety, comfort, and efficiency.
