Varanasi's Banaras Locomotive Works Completes Major Mozambique Export Order

In a significant development for India's industrial and export sectors, the Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) in Varanasi dispatched the 10th and final unit of a 3,300 horsepower AC–AC diesel-electric locomotive to Mozambique on Saturday. This milestone marks the successful completion of a substantial export order, underscoring the expanding international credibility and technological prowess of Indian Railways in the global locomotive market.

BLW Emerges as a Global Hub for Locomotive Exports

According to a spokesperson from BLW, the factory has firmly established itself as a premier global hub for locomotive exports. To date, BLW has delivered an impressive total of 182 locomotives to 11 countries across multiple continents. The diverse list of recipient nations includes Tanzania, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Sudan, Angola, Myanmar, Senegal, and Mali, demonstrating the widespread demand for Indian-manufactured rail technology.

The locomotives destined for Mozambique were exported in phases between June 2025 and February 21, with all units produced and delivered within the stipulated timelines. Officials confirmed that BLW received a specific order to manufacture and supply 10 units of these advanced 3,300 horsepower AC–AC diesel-electric locomotives for Mozambique, a task executed efficiently and on schedule.

Showcasing India's Technological and Industrial Strength

This achievement highlights India's formidable technological capability and industrial strength in the specialized field of locomotive manufacturing. The locomotives produced by BLW for Mozambique are designed to operate on Cape gauge tracks, which measure 1,067 mm in width, a standard used in various parts of Africa and other regions.

Key technical features of these locomotives include:

  • Operational speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, ensuring efficient and rapid transit capabilities.
  • Advanced AC–AC traction technology, which enhances performance, energy efficiency, and reliability in diverse operating conditions.
  • Modern and ergonomic cab design, prioritizing operator comfort, safety, and ease of use during long-haul journeys.

The successful fulfillment of this export order not only reinforces BLW's reputation as a reliable manufacturer but also positions Indian Railways as a competitive player in the international rail industry. This development is expected to pave the way for further export opportunities and collaborations, contributing to India's economic growth and global trade relations.
