Chennai Egmore Railway Station Launches E-Auction for New Multi-Level Parking Facility

The Chennai division of Southern Railway has officially announced an e-auction for the operation and management of a newly constructed multi-level parking facility. This facility is located within the multi-functional complex (MFC) at Egmore railway station, marking a significant step in the station's ongoing redevelopment efforts aimed at improving passenger amenities and infrastructure.

Details of the Multi-Functional Complex and Parking Facility

Indian Railways has built two multi-functional complexes at Egmore station—one on the Gandhi-Irwin Road side and another on the Poonamallee High Road side. These buildings are designed to house commercial retail outlets alongside organized multi-level parking facilities. The parking floors in the MFC building on the Gandhi-Irwin Road side have been completed and are now ready for operation.

The proposed contract specifically covers the operation and management of parking spaces on the second, third, and fourth floors of this building. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the overall passenger experience at the station.

Responsibilities and Opportunities for the Selected Licensee

The selected licensee will be responsible for several key tasks to ensure efficient parking management. These include regulating vehicle entry and exit, maintaining systematic parking arrangements, ensuring cleanliness of the premises, and deploying adequate manpower for smooth operations. Railways officials have emphasized that the operator may also introduce value-added services within the designated parking floors, subject to prior approval.

Potential value-added services could include facilities such as pay-and-use toilets, electric vehicle charging stations, and other passenger-oriented amenities. Charges for these services will be determined on a market-oriented basis, allowing for flexibility and responsiveness to passenger needs.

Transparency and Participation Through E-Auction

Officials from Southern Railway stated that the e-auction route was adopted to ensure transparency in the selection process and to encourage wider participation from eligible operators. This approach aims to attract a diverse range of bidders, fostering competition and potentially leading to better service offerings for passengers.

The move aligns with Indian Railways' ongoing efforts to modernize station infrastructure across the country, with Egmore station serving as a key example of how redevelopment projects can integrate commercial and parking facilities to benefit travelers.
