Southern Railway to Resume Chennai Suburban Train Services from April 5
In a significant development for daily commuters, Southern Railway has confirmed that suburban train operations on the Chennai Beach-Tambaram line will be fully restored starting April 5. This move comes after the successful completion of essential foundation work as part of the ongoing redevelopment project at Egmore railway station.
Completion of Key Infrastructure Work
The railways managed to finish the critical tasks near platforms 10 and 11 within the planned 45-day traffic block, which was in effect from February 20 to April 5. An official stated, "From April 5, the suburban trains will stop and go from platforms 10 and 11," highlighting the resumption of normal services. The effort involved round-the-clock work by over 600 personnel deployed in shifts, supported by heavy machinery including earth movers, piling rigs, cranes, and concrete mixers.
Key components of the work included laying foundations for new foot overbridges, constructing a 72-metre departure concourse, and erecting a 25-metre through-roof structure. These improvements are part of the broader redevelopment initiative aimed at enhancing passenger facilities at Egmore station.
Impact on Commuters and Mitigation Measures
During the traffic block, the frequency of suburban trains was reduced, and platforms for alighting and boarding were shifted to platforms 5 and 6. This adjustment caused considerable inconvenience to commuters who rely heavily on suburban trains for daily travel. In response, the railways implemented several measures to alleviate the hardship, such as operating special trains, fast locals, and coordinating with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to run special buses for affected passengers.
Viswanathan, a resident of Chitlapakkam, expressed relief at the decision to resume operations. He remarked, "Suburban trains are the lifeline of Chennai city, and railways should have a better plan when it has to do anything with their operation in future," echoing the sentiments of many commuters who faced disruptions.
Looking Ahead
The restoration of services is expected to bring much-needed relief to thousands of daily travelers, restoring normalcy to their routines. This development underscores the importance of suburban rail networks in urban mobility and highlights the railways' efforts to minimize disruption while upgrading infrastructure. Commuters are advised to check for any updates or schedule changes as services resume fully on April 5.
