China Eastern Airlines Resumes Kolkata Services After Six-Year Absence
In a significant development for air connectivity between India and China, China Eastern Airlines is set to return to Kolkata with flights from Kunming, commencing shortly after midnight on April 19. This marks the carrier's comeback after a hiatus of six years, with operations scheduled six days a week, excluding Wednesdays.
Expanding Direct Air Links Amid Thawing Relations
This revival represents the third direct flight route to China from Kolkata, following a period of strained bilateral ties after the 2020 Galwan Valley standoff. The resumption signals a gradual improvement in relations, underscored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attendance at the Shanghai Cooperation Summit. Concurrently, IndiGo operates a daily flight to Guangzhou and plans to launch a daily service to Shanghai from Kolkata starting March 29, further enhancing air travel options.
Flight Schedule and Operational Details
According to the airline, the Kunming-Kolkata flight, designated MU 555, will be operated using a Boeing 737 aircraft. It is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata at 12:10 am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The return flight, MU 556, will depart Kolkata at 1:10 am, reaching Kunming by 6:20 am local time.
Economic and Travel Implications
The return of China Eastern Airlines is anticipated to provide a substantial boost to trade and tourism in eastern India. Travel agents and industry experts highlight the potential for increased traffic to Beijing, other Chinese cities, and onward destinations. Anjani Dhanuka, Chairman (East) of the Travel Agents Association of India, noted, "China Eastern offers highly competitive fares to the Far East and the US West Coast. Given the current challenges in flying over the Gulf region due to the Iran-Israel conflict, many travelers may opt for China Eastern for US-bound journeys." A round-trip ticket to San Francisco via the airline typically costs between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.2 lakh.
Dhanuka also expects the flights to attract passengers traveling to Japan, Korea, and Australia, leveraging the airline's cost-effective pricing. Anil Punjabi, Chairman (East) of the Travel Agents Federation of India, emphasized, "The resumption of China Eastern services will significantly enhance travel trade and business connectivity in eastern India. Direct air access will make China a more viable destination for Indian leisure and business travelers, reducing reliance on multiple connections."

China Eastern Airlines last operated from Kolkata on March 19, 2020. The airline initially launched services on the Kolkata-Kunming route on October 30, 2007, which quickly gained popularity among businessmen and traders for its connectivity to Kunming and onward travel across China.
