Union Minister Chouhan Asserts India-US Trade Deal Favors Farmers

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasized on Monday that the recently finalized India–US trade agreement is designed to benefit the nation's farmers, with their interests being fully safeguarded under the leadership of the Prime Minister. During a one-day visit to Mathura, Chouhan addressed the media, highlighting that the deal exemplifies India's commitment to placing national interest at the forefront of diplomatic and developmental efforts.

Farmers' Concerns Prioritized in Trade Negotiations

In Vrindavan, Chouhan expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for ensuring that the interests of Indian farmers were meticulously protected throughout the trade negotiations. He described the agreement as a strategic move that balances diplomacy with economic development, keeping agricultural welfare as a central focus.

"I thank the Prime Minister for ensuring that the interests of India's farmers were fully protected in the India–US trade deal. It is an agreement in the national interest," Chouhan stated, reinforcing the government's dedication to agricultural stakeholders.

Sensitive Agricultural Items Excluded from Tariff Concessions

Chouhan detailed that several critical agricultural products have been deliberately kept outside the scope of the agreement to prevent any adverse impact on domestic farmers. No tariff concessions were granted on a wide range of items, including:

  • Soybean, corn, rice, wheat, and sugar
  • Coarse grains, poultry, and dairy products
  • Fruits such as banana, strawberry, cherry, and citrus fruits
  • Pulses like green peas, chickpeas, and mung beans
  • Oilseeds, ethanol, and tobacco

This exclusion list aims to shield local farmers from potential market fluctuations and competition, ensuring their livelihoods remain secure.

Religious Visit to Govardhan in Mathura

Later in the day, Chouhan visited Govardhan in Mathura, where he and his family engaged in religious activities. They performed the circumambulation of Govardhan Maharaj and participated in traditional rituals, reflecting a blend of official duties and personal spiritual commitments during his trip.

The minister's statements underscore the government's approach to international trade, where economic agreements are crafted with a keen eye on protecting domestic agricultural interests while fostering global partnerships.
