Himachal CM Sukhu Raises Alarm Over FTAs Impacting Horticulture Sector
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh has issued a stark warning regarding the potential negative consequences of recent free trade agreements (FTAs) on the horticulture industry in both Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar on Thursday, Sukhu highlighted the risks these international trade deals pose to local apple growers and orchardists.
Immediate Threats from Reduced Import Duties
The chief minister pointed out that the FTAs, which involve countries like New Zealand, the United States, and the European Union, include provisions for lowering import duties on key horticultural products. This reduction is expected to lead to a significant increase in the influx of apples, walnuts, almonds, and other similar goods from abroad. Sukhu cautioned that domestic farmers would face immense pressure to compete with these cheaper imports, potentially destabilizing their livelihoods.
Economic Backbone at Risk
Sukhu emphasized that agriculture and horticulture are fundamental to the economies of both Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, supporting a large portion of their populations. In Himachal Pradesh alone, the apple industry contributes an annual turnover of nearly Rs 5,000 crore and sustains approximately 2.5 lakh families through direct and indirect employment. Similarly, in Jammu and Kashmir, products like apples, walnuts, and almonds are central to the rural economy, providing essential livelihoods to thousands of residents.
Long-Term Concerns and Calls for Policy Review
The chief minister warned that the long-term effects of these FTAs could severely undermine the region's horticulture-based economy. He argued that such trade measures are detrimental to the interests of Indian farmers and called for an urgent review of policies that threaten domestic agricultural sustainability. Sukhu stressed the need for protective measures to safeguard the welfare of growers and ensure the continued viability of this critical sector.

In his address, Sukhu also referenced the ongoing political discourse surrounding farmers' issues. He noted that Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, has consistently raised concerns about farmers' welfare, asserting that his party remains committed to protecting the rights and interests of growers.
