Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has taken a significant leap forward in strengthening its cargo infrastructure with the inauguration of its newly extended Export Cargo Warehouse. This strategic expansion is set to significantly boost the airport's role as a key logistics hub in South India.
Major Boost in Cargo Handling Capacity
The primary outcome of this infrastructure project is a substantial increase in the airport's export cargo handling capability. The annual capacity has been elevated from 75,000 metric tonnes to an impressive 1,25,000 metric tonnes. This expansion is designed to facilitate faster processing times and improve the handling efficiency for a wide variety of goods, directly benefiting exporters who rely on the airport for their shipments.
State-of-the-Art Facilities for Enhanced Security and Specialized Cargo
The upgraded warehouse is not just bigger; it is smarter and more secure. To ensure stringent security checks, the facility is now equipped with two additional X-ray machines and explosive trace detection systems. Recognizing the diverse nature of modern export consignments, CIAL has incorporated several specialized zones:
- A dedicated room for handling dangerous goods.
- Two cold storage rooms meticulously maintained at temperatures between +2°C to +8°C for perishable items.
- A separate room for managing radioactive cargo.
- A secure valuables room for high-value consignments.
These additions are aimed at enhancing overall safety, security, and operational efficiency for all types of export cargo.
Focus on Evolving Trade and Exporter Benefits
The facility was formally inaugurated by Cial Managing Director S Suhas. Speaking at the event, Suhas emphasized that the new warehouse would provide tangible benefits to the exporting community. He highlighted improvements in turnaround times, stronger support for cold-chain logistics, and the ability to efficiently manage specialized cargo categories.
This project underscores CIAL's continued commitment to upgrading its infrastructure in alignment with the dynamic requirements of global trade and logistics, Suhas noted. With this expansion, Cochin International Airport is now fully equipped to handle a comprehensive range of export commodities, including:
- Perishable items like fruits, vegetables, and seafood.
- Temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals.
- Dangerous goods as per international regulations.
- Radioactive materials for medical and industrial use.
- High-value shipments such as electronics and jewellery.
The move positions CIAL to offer more reliable, secure, and efficient cargo services, supporting Kerala's and the broader region's economic and export growth.
