Delhi Airport's Third Runway Closure Postponed to Next Week
New Delhi: The closure of Runway 11R/29L, commonly referred to as the third runway at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, has been delayed. Initially scheduled to shut down for upgrades starting February 16, airport officials have announced that the closure will now commence in the coming week. This postponement is due to pending approvals from other agencies, which are still under review.
Upgrade Timeline and Summer Rush Impact
Once the runway is closed, it is expected to undergo significant upgrades and is likely to be recommissioned in July. Officials stated, "The runway is likely to be shut in the coming week," noting that this closure will coincide with the peak summer travel season. Despite the timing, the airport operator has assured that flight operations will not be significantly affected.
On average, Delhi airport handles approximately 1,520 flights daily, including both arrivals and departures. However, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates IGI airport, has previously confirmed that during the closure period, the airport's scheduled movement capacity will be maintained at 1,514 movements per day. This strategic planning aims to minimize disruptions.
Runway Infrastructure and Historical Context
Delhi airport currently operates with four runways: 27/9, 28/10, 29R/11L, and 11R/29L. The closure of Runway 28/10 in 2025 serves as a precedent, where around 200 flights were impacted daily. To mitigate similar effects this time, DIAL has engaged in extensive coordination efforts.
DIAL, in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India and other stakeholders, conducted multiple high-level consultations to assess and reduce the impact of the closure. As a result, operational plans have been established to ensure smooth continuity of services. Airlines and air traffic control have been fully briefed on these measures.
Upgrade Details and Safety Enhancements
The upgrade work on the third runway is comprehensive and includes:
- Resurfacing of the runway to improve durability and performance.
- Construction of a new rapid exit taxiway to enhance aircraft movement efficiency.
- Installation of a new instrument landing system to boost navigation accuracy and safety.
An airport official emphasized the importance of these upgrades, stating, "The third runway—commissioned in 2008 and in continuous service for 17 years—will undergo essential strengthening and upgrade works aimed at enhancing safety, operational resilience, and capacity for future growth." This project is crucial for maintaining the airport's infrastructure and supporting increased air traffic in the years to come.
