Dhubri River Port Customs Centre Inaugurated to Boost Regional Trade
The Customs and Immigration Centre at Dhubri International River Port, recently inaugurated under the "Vikash Bhi Aur Virasat Bhi" initiative, is set to open new avenues for trade along the Indo-Bangla-Bhutan route. Constructed at a cost of Rs 9 crore, this facility features two offices, a conference hall, staff quarters, and other amenities for stakeholders.
Enhancing Trade Efficiency and Connectivity
Officials at Dhubri port have stated that the inauguration of these facilities will not only enhance the port's importance but also strengthen the regional trade network. A key benefit is the significant reduction in logistics costs for transporting goods in the northeast, which is expected to boost economic activity.
"This initiative aims to streamline cross-border trade, improve cargo movements, and facilitate passenger travel through the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route," officials added, highlighting the multifaceted advantages of the new centre.
Reviving Historical Trade Routes
In an interview with TOI, Dhubri-Gauripur Development Authority chairman Dipak Kumar Saha emphasized that the centre addresses a long-standing demand. It will restart trade and business through the Dhubri River Port, which had been halted since the Indo-Pak War in 1965.
"With these facilities available here, trade will witness a regional and international impact," Saha noted. He further explained that the centre will connect with India's first Multi-Model Logistics Park at Jogighopa River Port, creating a far-reaching effect on trade and business in the region and beyond the border.
Strategic Implications for Northeast India
- The centre is expected to reduce transportation costs and improve supply chain efficiency.
- It will facilitate smoother cross-border movements of goods and passengers.
- The connection to Jogighopa's logistics park promises enhanced multimodal transport options.
- This development marks a significant step in reviving Dhubri's historical role as a trade hub.
Overall, the Dhubri Customs and Immigration Centre represents a strategic investment in infrastructure that aims to foster economic growth, strengthen international trade relations, and position the northeast as a key player in regional commerce.
