Dubai Advances Pedestrian Infrastructure with Major Al Ras Walkway Project
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has officially awarded the contract for the first phase of the ambitious Dubai Walk Master Plan, focusing on the historic Al Ras area. This significant urban development initiative will introduce a comprehensive 12-kilometer pedestrian walkway designed to seamlessly connect key heritage sites with the city's extensive public transport network.
Comprehensive Connectivity and Heritage Integration
The newly announced project encompasses much more than just a simple walking path. It includes an integrated 5-kilometer cycling track, promoting eco-friendly mobility options alongside pedestrian access. The walkway is strategically planned to link major cultural and historical landmarks, including the iconic Al Fahidi Fort, the Al Shindagha Historic District, and the Al Ahmadiya School, ensuring that Dubai's rich heritage remains accessible and celebrated.
To enhance first and last mile connectivity, the network will incorporate 11 metro, bus, and marine transport stations. This integration is expected to significantly improve accessibility for both residents and tourists, making it easier to navigate the area without relying solely on private vehicles.
Artistic and Cultural Enhancements
In collaboration with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the project will rehabilitate 10 artistic spaces along the walkway. These areas will feature contributions from local and Emirati artists, showcasing murals, sculptures, and advanced lighting installations. These creative elements are designed to enrich the cultural identity of the district, blending modern artistic expressions with traditional heritage.
Additional amenities planned for the walkway include widened pedestrian pathways, shaded areas for comfort during Dubai's warm climate, numerous seating zones, and lush green spaces. A sophisticated wayfinding system will also be implemented to guide visitors through the historical district, complementing its storied past.
Strategic Location and Broader Urban Goals
Al Ras, situated in Deira and bordering the Dubai Creek, is renowned for preserving the authentic charm and lifestyle of old Dubai. As a key tourist destination, it offers a unique blend of traditional living alongside modern conversions such as boutique hotels, art galleries, and cafes. The Dubai Walk Master Plan aims to enhance this appeal while supporting broader urban objectives.
This initiative is a critical component of Dubai's strategy to transform into a pedestrian-friendly city, aligning with the Dubai Urban Plan 2040. That plan targets enabling residents to access over 80% of essential services within a 20-minute journey, promoting sustainable urban mobility.
Long-Term Vision and Impact
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that the pedestrian master plan will bolster Dubai's global competitiveness in walkway infrastructure. It also supports the emirate's Quality of Life Strategy 2033, aiming to enhance pedestrian safety, strengthen connectivity between districts, and integrate creative and cultural elements into the mobility framework.
The broader Dubai Walk Master Plan envisions the development of more than 6,000 kilometers of walkways across 160 areas by 2040. This expansive network will include the construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses to improve connectivity throughout the emirate. The RTA has set a goal to increase the share of walking and soft mobility trips from 16% in 2025 to 25% by 2040, driven by the rollout of integrated, accessible, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
