West Asia Conflict Triggers Severe Gas Crisis, Paralyzing Shivamogga's Hotel Industry
The ongoing war in West Asia has created a devastating ripple effect, with commercial gas supplies severely disrupted and directly impacting the hospitality sector in Shivamogga. Following an emergency meeting on Wednesday led by Shankaranarayana Holla, the Shivamogga District Hotel Owners' Association made the difficult decision that most establishments in the city will suspend operations starting Thursday.
Impossible Business Conditions Force Widespread Shutdowns
With private companies halting gas deliveries and local agencies facing complete stock depletion, hoteliers describe the situation as untenable for continuing operations. Approximately 98% of local hotels and eateries depend entirely on commercial LPG for their cooking needs, creating a crisis where owners are struggling to even pay employee wages.
Starting Thursday, an estimated 90% of Shivamogga's hotels are expected to close their doors. Only those establishments utilizing firewood or electric ovens and stoves will remain functional, and even these will offer only limited menus due to operational constraints.
Urgent Government Intervention Demanded
Uday, the state zonal secretary for the hotel owners' union, has made an urgent appeal to government authorities to intervene immediately. He emphasized the need to ensure at least 50% gas supply is maintained to protect both the livelihoods of hospitality workers and the interests of the general public who depend on these establishments.
The crisis extends beyond Shivamogga, with the tourism sector in neighboring Kodagu already expressing serious concerns over LPG cylinder shortages. Dinesh Cariappa, president of the District Hotel and Resort Entrepreneurs' Association, noted that recent price hikes for LPG cylinders had already strained the industry before the current supply disruption.
"If the situation continues for some more days, it may be difficult to operate hotels," Cariappa warned, while acknowledging that, fortunately, petrol and diesel supplies remain unaffected for now.
Environmental Consequences Emerge as Firewood Demand Surges
As LPG cylinder prices skyrocket and commercial supply chains are expected to deteriorate further, the traditional practice of firewood collection has experienced a sudden resurgence throughout the Malnad area. This development comes at a particularly challenging time, as the region prepares for numerous local fairs and festivals over the next two months.
These events typically involve large-scale cooking of non-vegetarian items that demand substantial fuel consumption. Reports indicate that residents are increasingly trespassing into protected forest areas to collect branches, with disturbing allegations emerging about healthy trees being chopped down to meet the urgent demand for cooking fuel.
Environmental experts have issued stark warnings that if the current crisis persists, pressure on Malnad's forests will intensify dramatically, potentially leading to significant and lasting ecological damage that could take years to repair.
