Gaya Railway Renovation Ends, Passenger Problems Remain

Gaya Railway Station's Mega Block Concludes, But Passenger Challenges Linger

The extensive six-week mega block at Gaya railway station, which had completely halted operations on platforms 2 and 3, officially ended on March 22. This significant disruption was implemented to facilitate critical infrastructure upgrades, including track maintenance, the installation of an advanced signaling system, and the erection of an air concourse girder.

Renovation Project Details and Impact

This mega block was a crucial component of the ambitious Rs 300 crore renovation and development initiative aimed at transforming Gaya railway station. The project's goal is to elevate the station to international standards, providing state-of-the-art amenities for rail users and stakeholders, with a vision to resemble a modern airport facility.

During the block, the Patna-Gaya section experienced the most severe disruptions. Eight passenger trains operating on this route had to be terminated at Chakand station, located 8 kilometers north of Gaya railway station, causing considerable inconvenience to travelers.

Resumption of Normal Operations

According to station superintendent Vinod Kumar, with the conclusion of the mega block, normal operations have resumed at the station. Platforms 2 and 3 are now fully operational, marking a return to the pre-block schedule and services.

Persistent Passenger Problems

Despite the end of the block, several significant issues continue to plague rail users, as highlighted by Lalji Prasad, secretary of the Grand Chord Passengers Association. The challenges faced by passengers remain multifaceted and unresolved.

  • Narrow Access Routes: The approach roads from the Railway Hospital and Delha sides remain extremely narrow, leading to perennial congestion and traffic jams. This causes passengers to frequently miss their trains due to delays in reaching the station.
  • Infrastructure Shortcomings: Proper alignment of the road overbridge at level crossing number 2 has not been completed. Additionally, the closure of level crossing number 1 has created substantial inconvenience for the general public.
  • Closed Foot Overbridge: The foot overbridge on the Howrah side has been shut down, forcing passengers to walk much longer distances to access platforms 2 through 8.
  • Confusing Platform Numbering: The station's platform numbering system remains highly confusing, with four different platforms all labeled as number 1 (specifically 1, 1A, 1B, and 1C).
  • Animal Menace: Cattle and dog disturbances persist on the station premises, posing safety and hygiene concerns.
  • Exorbitant Parking Charges: Parking fees at the station are more than double those at the local airport. While airport parking costs only Rs 30, the station charges a steep Rs 75, adding financial burden to travelers.

Official Responses and Review Meeting

When questioned about the narrow approach roads, station superintendent Vinod Kumar acknowledged that while the circulating areas at both exit points have been sufficiently widened, the approach routes themselves remain a significant area of concern.

This issue was prominently discussed during a review meeting convened by Gaya Town MLA and assembly Speaker Prem Kumar. The Speaker assured railway officials that he would direct the District Magistrate to take necessary steps for properly widening the approach roads on both the Delha and Railway Hospital sides. This intervention aims to address one of the most pressing problems faced by passengers.

The renovation of Gaya railway station represents a major infrastructure investment, yet the persistence of these operational and accessibility issues underscores the need for comprehensive solutions beyond structural upgrades. Passenger associations continue to advocate for immediate improvements to enhance the travel experience at this key transportation hub.
