In a significant boost to India's defence export capabilities, state-owned Gliders India Limited (GIL) has clinched a major Rs 30 crore order from Vietnam. The contract involves the supply of critical braking and safety parachutes for Su-30 fighter aircraft, marking a notable achievement for the domestic aerospace sector.
Strategic Export Contract Details
Based in Kanpur, GIL operates as a defence public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, specialising in mission-critical aerospace systems. The firm has committed to delivering the parachutes by the end of this year, adhering to strict timelines. This export agreement highlights the growing international confidence in Indian defence manufacturing, which is built on stringent compliance with global quality and safety standards.

Critical Safety Systems for Combat Aircraft
The contract specifically covers the supply of twin-canopy brake parachutes and PSU-36 series pilot parachutes, both of which are essential safety systems used in high-performance combat aircraft. These systems play a vital role during aircraft landing, aborted take-off, and emergency escape scenarios, ensuring the safety of pilots and enhancing overall operational reliability.
Technical Specifications of the Parachute Systems
The brake parachute supplied by GIL is engineered to reduce the landing run of Sukhoi Su-30 aircraft at speeds ranging from 180 kmph to 300 kmph. It features a twin unicross canopy design, incorporating two main parachutes, each with a surface area of 24 square metres and a span of nearly 6.85 metres. Weighing approximately 24 kilograms, this parachute system is capable of deployment at normal speeds of 260 kmph and emergency speeds of up to 300 kmph, with an operational life of 55 streaming cycles or 10 years.
Advanced Pilot Parachute Capabilities
The order also includes PSU-36 series 4-3 pilot parachutes for the Su-30, which form an integral part of the ejection seat system on jet fighters. Designed to enable safe escape over land or water, the pilot parachute can be deployed at speeds of up to 650 kmph and altitudes of up to 6,000 metres. This system boasts a canopy area of 60 square metres, supports payloads of up to 138 kilograms, and ensures a controlled descent rate of 19 to 20 feet per second.
