Ahmedabad: Customs officials seized 24 foreign-origin gold biscuits weighing 2.8 kg and valued at approximately Rs 4.3 crore after they were found concealed inside the speaker box of an aircraft lavatory at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport on Friday.
Recovery During Rummaging Operation
According to a customs department release, the recovery was made during a rummaging operation conducted on board a flight that had arrived from Dubai on June 12. With the assistance of aircraft engineers, customs officers located two pouches wrapped in black plastic tape hidden inside the speaker box in the aircraft’s front lavatory.
Details of the Seized Gold
On examination, the pouches were found to contain 24 gold biscuits of 24 karat purity, collectively weighing 2,799.3 grams.
Officials said the manner in which the gold was concealed suggested it had been secretly hidden by an unidentified person with the intention of smuggling it into India in violation of the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
Seizure and Investigation
As no passenger or crew member came forward to claim lawful ownership of the recovered gold, the consignment was seized as unclaimed under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act.
Customs officials have launched further investigations to identify the person responsible for concealing the gold and to ascertain whether the seizure is linked to a larger smuggling network.
