Piyush Goyal Advocates for Inclusive WTO Reforms at Cameroon Conference
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has called for comprehensive reforms within the World Trade Organization (WTO), stressing that such changes must be conducted through a transparent, inclusive, and member-driven process. Speaking at the 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Goyal highlighted the importance of keeping development at the core of these reforms while upholding the foundational principles and objectives of the organization.
Emphasis on Consensus and Development
Goyal asserted that any incorporation of plurilateral outcomes into the WTO framework should be based on consensus. He emphasized that these adjustments must not impair the existing rights of non-parties or impose additional obligations on them. This approach aims to ensure fairness and equity among all member nations, fostering a collaborative environment for global trade.
Addressing Past Mandates and Dispute Settlement
The minister pointed out that past mandates should be delivered on priority, noting that a dysfunctional Dispute Settlement System has deprived members of effective redressal mechanisms. Goyal urged the restoration of an automatic and binding dispute settlement system, which is crucial for maintaining trust and stability in international trade relations. This call for reform underscores the need for a robust framework that can address conflicts efficiently and impartially.
