The Guntur Railway Division has unveiled a comprehensive Rs 60 crore modernisation plan for seven major goods sheds, driven by robust freight earnings in the 2025-26 fiscal year. The initiative is designed to enhance cargo handling capabilities and attract increased freight traffic to the region.
Key Goods Sheds Identified for Upgrades
The sheds earmarked for modernisation include Guntur-Reddipalem, Nallapadu, Vemuru, Markapuram Road, Satulur, Nandyal, and Nadikudi. Officials have stated that these upgrades are essential to meet the growing demand from industries, agricultural markets, and traders operating in the area.
Allocation of Funds
- Guntur-Reddipalem, one of the busiest terminals, has been allocated Rs 15.67 crore.
- Vemuru will receive Rs 11.19 crore for its upgrade.
- Markapuram Road has been allotted Rs 11.09 crore.
- Satulur will see works worth Rs 10.23 crore.
- Nallapadu has been allocated Rs 6.77 crore.
- Nadikudi will get Rs 4.09 crore.
- Funds have also been proposed for Nandyal.
Scope of Modernisation Works
The modernisation plan includes the construction of cement-concrete approach roads and internal roads, dedicated truck parking areas, improved drainage systems, high-mast lighting, compound walls, administrative buildings, rest rooms, drinking water facilities, and upgraded loading platforms. These improvements are expected to significantly reduce turnaround times and enhance the ease of operations for freight handlers.
Freight Growth Driving the Initiative
The move comes on the back of strong freight performance. The Guntur Railway Division reported earnings of Rs 766.57 crore in 2025-26, with freight contributing over Rs 450 crore. Key commodities driving volumes include cement, fertilisers, food grains, industrial raw materials, and agricultural produce.
Officials believe that the modernisation will strengthen freight operations, improve logistics facilities, and encourage a shift of bulk cargo from road to rail. This initiative reinforces Guntur's position as a critical freight hub in the region.
