Guwahati Airport's Terminal 2 Strengthens Domestic Network with Five Airlines
In a significant development for regional aviation, the newly inaugurated Terminal 2 (T2) at Guwahati Airport has expanded and reinforced its domestic network, with five domestic airlines officially transitioning their operations to the state-of-the-art facility. Officials confirmed this shift on Saturday, highlighting the terminal's role in boosting connectivity across the northeast.
Phased Transition for Enhanced Operations
The airport management released an official statement detailing that SpiceJet, Alliance Air, Air India Express, Air India, and Akasa Air have successfully moved their domestic services to T2. Meanwhile, IndiGo and international flights will continue to operate from the existing Terminal 1, with plans to relocate in a phased manner in the near future. This strategic move aims to streamline operations and improve overall efficiency.
Increased Passenger Capacity and Regional Impact
With the commissioning of T2, the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport (LGBIA) now boasts an enhanced annual passenger handling capacity of 13.1 million. This expansion is designed to meet rising traffic demands and solidify Guwahati's position as the primary aviation gateway to the northeastern region. The upgrade is expected to foster improved regional connectivity, support tourism growth, and stimulate economic development in the area.
Advanced Technology and Passenger-Centric Features
The new terminal is equipped with cutting-edge, technology-enabled infrastructure to elevate the passenger experience. Key features include:
- DigiYatra-enabled e-gates for seamless entry
- Self-bag drop counters to reduce wait times
- Full-body scanners for enhanced security
- An automated baggage handling system for efficiency
Additionally, facilities such as check-in at the parking area and the arrival forecourt have been implemented to facilitate smoother passenger movement throughout the airport.
Cultural Heritage and Design Elements
Drawing inspiration from Assam's rich natural and cultural heritage, T2's design incorporates traditional Assamese motifs and local flora. The interiors feature:
- Bamboo-inspired elements reflecting the region's abundant growth
- Orchid-themed columns adding aesthetic appeal
- Traditional Japi motifs, symbolizing heritage and hospitality
A unique 'Sky Forest' arrival experience, adorned with over one lakh native plants, further enriches the passenger journey, creating a welcoming and immersive environment.
Inauguration and Future Prospects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Terminal 2 in December of the previous year, with domestic operations commencing on February 22. This development marks a pivotal step in modernizing Guwahati Airport, aligning with broader efforts to enhance aviation infrastructure in India. As the transition continues, the airport is poised to play a crucial role in connecting the northeast to domestic and international destinations, driving forward regional progress and connectivity.
