Ludhiana's Halwara Airport Finally Takes to the Skies After Three Decades
The industrial heart of Punjab has reached a monumental aviation milestone, with ticket bookings officially opening on Wednesday for the first-ever commercial flights at Halwara Airport. This development concludes a prolonged three-decade wait for enhanced air connectivity in the region.
Inaugural Services and Immediate Demand
Air India is set to operate the inaugural services, scheduled to commence on May 15. The carrier's official schedule reveals that the service will feature two daily rotations between Ludhiana and Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. This launch has already triggered a significant rush of bookings from local business leaders and enthusiastic residents, highlighting the pent-up demand for improved air travel options.
District officials have confirmed that demand has been immediate and substantial. Notably, Punjab's industry minister, Sanjeev Arora, alongside his wife, has secured the first flight from Delhi to Halwara, symbolizing the government's support for this critical infrastructure project.
Operational Preparations and Staff Deployment
Sources within the Airports Authority of India indicate that airline staff will begin occupying offices at Halwara in the coming weeks. Air India is expected to deploy approximately 22 personnel, including both ground and office staff, to efficiently manage the operations of the new terminal. This staffing move underscores the airline's commitment to ensuring smooth and professional service from the outset.
Technical Glitches and Passenger Concerns
Despite the celebratory mood in Ludhiana, some early travelers have reported minor technical inconsistencies on digital booking platforms. Chartered accountant Ankur Mahajan noted that while he successfully booked a seat on the first flight, the airline's website incorrectly displayed the destination as "Sahnewal Airport"—a smaller, older facility—instead of the new Halwara hub.
"Third-party apps are also showing conflicting dates," Mahajan stated, urging a swift correction to prevent passenger confusion and ensure a seamless travel experience. These teething problems are common with new airport launches but require prompt attention to maintain trust and efficiency.
Future Aspirations and Economic Impact
Local industry leaders have warmly welcomed the Delhi connection but are already looking toward future expansions. Industrialist Daleep Khanna emphasized that for Ludhiana to truly thrive as a global industrial hub, this must be the first of many routes.
"The purpose of this airport will only be fully served once we have regular flights to other major Indian metros, followed eventually by international services," Khanna asserted. This perspective highlights the broader economic and logistical benefits anticipated from the airport, which could boost trade, tourism, and business connectivity in Punjab.
