61st IHGF Delhi Spring Fair Kicks Off in Greater Noida with Focus on Exports

The 61st edition of the Indian Handicrafts and Gifts (IHGF) Delhi Spring Fair officially began with an inaugural preview event on Friday, offering an exclusive first look at export-ready collections from across the nation. This major B2B (business-to-business) fair, organized by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), is scheduled to run for five days from February 14 to February 18 at the Expo Centre and Mart in Greater Noida.

Government Support for Artisans and Weavers

Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurated the fair, emphasizing the government's commitment to empowering small artisans and weavers. He announced plans to directly connect these craftspeople through a hub and export model. "We will collaborate with small artisans and weavers, and will try to build our presence in Europe too. This will enable India's handloom, handicrafts and textiles industry to reach new heights," Singh stated during the inauguration ceremony.

Expansive Showcase of Indian Craftsmanship

The bi-annual fair represents an impressive network of over 10,000 manufacturers and exporters of handicrafts from throughout India. This year's event places special emphasis on crafts from Bihar and Chhattisgarh, while also highlighting the furniture segment with participation from more than 350 furniture exhibitors.

Dr. Neeraj Khanna, Chairman of EPCH, explained that the fair presents a comprehensive range of export-ready furniture and related home categories, providing global buyers with opportunities to explore design depth, materials, and exceptional craftsmanship. "The fair serves as a crucial platform for international buyers to discover the richness of Indian handicrafts," Khanna noted.

Trade Agreements Enhancing Market Access

Khanna further highlighted how recent international trade agreements are creating new opportunities for Indian handicrafts. "The India-UK Free Trade Agreement has already enhanced market access and trade opportunities," he said. "The recently signed India-EU Free Trade Agreement further strengthens India's trade framework, particularly benefiting the handicrafts sector in European markets."

Special Features and Design Innovations

The 2024 IHGF Delhi Spring Fair includes several distinctive elements:

  • A dedicated 'trend booth' showcasing emerging design directions
  • Curated collections from select handloom weavers in India's North-Eastern states
  • The Young Designers' Collective featuring designers from prestigious institutions including NID Ahmedabad, NIFT, and the Royal College of Art, London

This comprehensive exhibition not only celebrates traditional Indian craftsmanship but also bridges it with contemporary design sensibilities, creating a dynamic marketplace for both domestic and international buyers seeking unique, high-quality handicraft products.
