India Plans Insurance Support for Exporters Amid West Asia Crisis
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Tuesday that the Indian government is actively exploring measures to extend insurance support to exporters grappling with the ongoing West Asia crisis. This initiative aims to mitigate the financial risks and logistical challenges faced by businesses due to regional conflicts and maritime disruptions.
Daily Monitoring and Inter-Ministerial Coordination
Goyal revealed that an inter-ministerial group has been established to closely monitor developments in the region on a daily basis. This team is in constant interaction with exporters to assess their needs and provide timely assistance. The government is maintaining a 24-hour vigil to address emerging issues promptly, ensuring that exporters receive the necessary support as the situation evolves.
Customs Norms for Returned Export Cargo
In response to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and other maritime route disruptions, the Customs department has introduced specific norms for handling export cargo that returns to Indian ports. These guidelines are designed to streamline processes and reduce bureaucratic hurdles for exporters whose shipments have been affected by the crisis.
Developing New Insurance Schemes
Minister Goyal emphasized that the government is consulting with the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) and other relevant departments to develop new insurance schemes. These schemes are intended to provide financial protection to exporters, particularly those whose goods have already been shipped but are encountering problems due to the volatile situation in West Asia.
"We are looking for developing some new schemes like insurance support... We are consulting ECGC and other departments on that," Goyal stated, highlighting the collaborative effort to create robust support mechanisms.

The government is also examining ways to assist exporters whose shipments are in transit but facing delays or other issues. This includes exploring logistical solutions and financial aid to help businesses navigate the crisis without significant losses.
