IndiGo Announces Direct Daily Flight from Kolkata to Shanghai
In a significant development for the aviation sector, IndiGo has unveiled plans to launch a direct daily service between Kolkata and Shanghai, bringing a wave of optimism amidst ongoing disruptions in the aviation industry caused by conflicts in West Asia. This announcement, made on Monday evening, marks a strategic expansion for the airline, aiming to strengthen connectivity between India and China.
Enhancing Connectivity and Economic Ties
This new route represents the second daily flight operated by IndiGo between Kolkata and China, following the commencement of a service to Guangzhou on November 10, 2025. Vinay Malhotra, the global head of sales at IndiGo Airlines, emphasized the importance of this addition, stating, "Shanghai is not only China's largest city but also a global financial hub, renowned for its blend of futuristic skyscrapers and historic landmarks. This flight is poised to play a pivotal role in facilitating bilateral trade, boosting tourism, and fostering greater cultural exchange between our nations."
Flight Details and Operational Plans
The airline will utilize an Airbus A320 aircraft for this route. The flight schedule is set as follows: departure from Kolkata at 9:45 PM, arriving in Shanghai at 4:40 AM local time the next day. The return flight will take off from Shanghai at 5:40 AM local time, landing in Kolkata at 9:05 AM. To attract passengers, IndiGo has introduced a starting return fare of Rs 28,000, making it an affordable option for travelers.
Industry Reactions and Economic Impact
Industry experts have welcomed this move, highlighting its potential benefits. Anil Punjabi, chairman (east) of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), noted, "This new flight will be a boon for both business and leisure travelers. Previously, those heading to Shanghai had to connect via hubs like Singapore or Bangkok, adding to travel time and inconvenience." Manav Soni of the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) added, "This route is expected to become a major sector for Kolkata, given the substantial business interactions between the two cities."
The trading community anticipates a positive impact on exports from Bengal to China, particularly in sectors such as marine products, leather goods, and specialized textiles. This enhanced air link is expected to streamline logistics and reduce costs, thereby boosting trade volumes.
Broader Aviation Context and Future Prospects
This announcement comes at a time when the aviation industry is grappling with challenges stemming from geopolitical tensions in West Asia, including incidents like Israel's attacks on Iran and related conflicts. Despite these disruptions, IndiGo's expansion underscores its commitment to growth and connectivity. Additionally, sources indicate that China Eastern Airlines is considering resuming its daily service between Kolkata and Kunming, suggesting a broader trend of strengthening air links between India and China.
In summary, IndiGo's Kolkata-Shanghai flight is set to enhance economic and cultural ties, offering a direct and efficient travel option that promises to benefit passengers and businesses alike.
