Indore Airport's Terminal 1 Reopens to Enhance Air Travel Efficiency

Air travel from Indore is poised for a significant upgrade as the renovated Terminal 1, also known as the Old Terminal, at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport prepares to resume flight operations starting in April. This strategic move aims to streamline airport activities and accommodate the city's rapidly growing passenger traffic.

Flight Operations Shift to Optimize Airport Functionality

To optimize operational efficiency, 16 daily flights will be relocated from Terminal 2 to the revamped Terminal 1. These flights primarily involve smaller 76-seater aircraft, with Indigo operating 14 of them, while Star Air and Alliance Air will manage one flight each. Key routes affected include:

  • Lucknow
  • Raipur
  • Jaipur
  • Jabalpur

Additionally, Air India Express's Sharjah flight is scheduled to operate from Terminal 1, further diversifying the terminal's international connectivity.

Enhanced Infrastructure and Passenger Capacity

The terminal renovation, completed at a cost of Rs 50 crore, has been upgraded to handle 300 passengers per hour. This development comes at a crucial time, as the airport, with a current capacity of 40 lakh passengers annually, recorded nearly 44 lakh passengers in the past year alone. The reopening of Terminal 1 will add an annual capacity of 10 lakh passengers, elevating the airport's total capacity to 50 lakh passengers per year.

Interim Solution Amidst Rapid Growth

Airport director Sunil Maggirwar emphasized that this is an interim arrangement pending the construction of a new, larger terminal. With Indore's passenger growth rate expected to surpass the 50-lakh mark within the next two years, the airport faces a race against time to enhance its capacity. "This revamped terminal will significantly reduce the pressure on our current facilities while we move towards more permanent, large-scale expansions," he stated, highlighting the terminal's role in mitigating congestion and supporting future development plans.

The reopening of Terminal 1 not only promises improved convenience for travelers but also underscores Indore's commitment to advancing its aviation infrastructure in response to escalating demand.
