Major construction work at Ludhiana railway station has triggered significant overcrowding and passenger inconvenience. The ongoing upgrade of platforms 2 and 3, which began on December 2, has forced the closure of these platforms, diverting multiple train services to other areas of the station.
Construction Work Leads to Platform Diversions
As one of Punjab's busiest transit hubs, Ludhiana station is in the midst of a substantial renovation. The work on platforms 2 and 3 is a key part of this project, but its immediate effect has been the temporary re-routing of trains. Services that typically halt on the closed platforms are now being directed to other platforms, primarily platform number 1.
This sudden shift has resulted in a sharp surge in footfall on the remaining operational platforms. The concentrated passenger load has overwhelmed the available infrastructure, leading to dense crowds, especially during peak arrival and departure hours. The waiting space on platform 1 is consistently packed, creating a challenging environment for travelers.
Passenger Frustration Over Inadequate Facilities
Commuters have voiced strong dissatisfaction with the insufficient seating arrangements. While railway authorities have moved some chairs from the closed platforms to platform 1, passengers assert that this measure falls drastically short of meeting the daily demand.
"There are not enough seats for the number of people waiting here now," said Arun, a regular traveler. He highlighted the compounding issue of scheduling, noting, "Sometimes trains from different directions arrive within minutes of each other. With so many passengers gathered here, seating becomes a struggle, especially for families and older people."
The problem is exacerbated for those traveling with family. Ankur, who was heading to Delhi, shared his ordeal: "It's tiring to stand with luggage and kids. If construction is happening, we understand. But then increase the seating too."
Delays and Long Waits Add to the Burden
The situation is further strained by the seasonal issue of fog-related train delays. Long waiting periods, combined with the existing congestion on platform 1, have made the travel experience arduous.
Shivani, a resident, expressed her frustration: "Trains are getting delayed. I have been waiting for a train for the past two hours, but the rush on platform No. 1 is becoming too suffocating. I hope that the construction work gets completed soon, otherwise, travelling from Ludhiana railway station is becoming really arduous."
Railway officials have provided a timeline for the project's completion, stating that the construction work on platforms 2 and 3 is expected to be finished by March. Until then, passengers must navigate the crowded conditions at this key Punjab station.
