Madurai Railway Division Makes History with Record Freight Performance

In a landmark achievement, the Madurai railway division has surpassed its freight loading target for the financial year 2025–26, marking the first time in its history. On Wednesday, the division officially crossed the set goal of 3.501 million tonnes, showcasing significant operational success and strategic growth in freight handling.

Detailed Breakdown of Freight Volumes

The division's total freight loading exceeded 3.5 million tonnes, with a detailed composition highlighting its diverse cargo portfolio. Key contributions included:

  • Fertilisers: 1.7598 million tonnes
  • Coal: 0.7993 million tonnes
  • Food grains: 0.0434 million tonnes
  • Cement: 0.0862 million tonnes
  • Containers: 0.0065 million tonnes
  • Other goods: 0.8629 million tonnes

New Loading Milestones and Innovations

Beyond the overall target, the Madurai division achieved several pioneering loading milestones, expanding its operational reach and efficiency. Notable firsts include:

  • Dun peas: Loaded for the first time from Milavittan to Dankuni Junction in the Howrah division of Eastern Railway, with five rakes totalling 9,717 tonnes.
  • Musoor dal: Newly loaded from Milavittan to Azara in the Rangiya division of Northeast Frontier Railway and Manikpur Junction in the Prayagraj division of North Central Railway during March.
  • Container loading: Initiated to a new destination from Gangaikondan to Deshnoke in the Bikaner division of North Western Railway, with three rakes in August 2025.

Record-Breaking Monthly Performances

The division also set new benchmarks in monthly loading across various commodities, demonstrating consistent excellence:

  • SPIC fertiliser loading: Achieved its highest-ever monthly total of 0.1119 million tonnes in July 2025.
  • TAFE tractor loading: Reached 125 rakes so far in this financial year, the second-highest on record, trailing only the 140 rakes loaded in 2022–23.
  • BRN (flat wagon) rakes: Attained its highest-ever monthly loading with nine rakes from Vadipatti in October 2025, including six to Bhagat Ki Kothi in the Jodhpur division and three to Dhanakya in the Jaipur division of North Western Railway.

These achievements highlight the Madurai railway division's enhanced capabilities and strategic initiatives in freight logistics, contributing significantly to regional economic development and railway network efficiency.
