Maharashtra Minister Engages ADB for Agricultural Infrastructure Boost
Mumbai: In a significant diplomatic and economic outreach, Maharashtra's Agricultural Marketing and Protocol Minister, Jaykumar Rawal, has actively sought the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for modernizing the state's Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and advancing the Maharashtra Agribusiness Network (MAGNET) project. This initiative unfolded during Minister Rawal's official visit to Manila, Philippines, where he participated in the high-profile 'Asia and the Pacific Food Systems Forum 2026' held at the ADB headquarters.
Strategic Discussions with ADB Leadership
During his visit, Minister Rawal held crucial meetings with top ADB officials, including Yingming Yang, the Vice-President for South, Central, and West Asia. The discussions centered on several key areas: the progress of the MAGNET project, the development of the Mumbai International Agriculture Market (MIAM), and comprehensive plans for modernizing and strengthening APMCs across Maharashtra. The MAGNET project, an ADB-assisted initiative, is specifically designed to enhance the income of small and marginal farmers by fortifying the horticultural value chain, making it a cornerstone of the state's agricultural reforms.
Additional sessions were conducted with ADB Director General Winfried Wicklein and Senior Sector Director Kenyingfeng Zhang. These interactions focused on securing ADB's cooperation to bolster Maharashtra's agriculture infrastructure, improve post-harvest management systems, and implement reforms within the agri-logistics sector. Minister Rawal emphasized that this collaboration is expected to accelerate the modernization of Maharashtra's agricultural and marketing sectors, ultimately creating a more capable and competitive marketplace for the state's farming community.
Vision for Developed Maharashtra 2047
Speaking at an international seminar hosted at the ADB headquarters, Minister Rawal presented a compelling vision for 'Developed Maharashtra 2047,' outlining a detailed roadmap for the evolution of APMCs. He underscored that mutual cooperation and the adoption of cutting-edge technology are indispensable for the rapid development of agricultural and marketing systems. "A key objective of this visit is to study global best practices specifically for our MAGNET project. By exploring new opportunities for future collaboration, the state aims to empower Maharashtra's agricultural and market infrastructure, making them more resilient and capable on an international scale," Rawal stated.
Global Participation and Future Implications
The seminar witnessed high-level participation from global leaders, including Mariano Assanami Sabino Lopes, the Deputy Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, and Yoichi Watanabe, Japan's Vice Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. This international engagement highlights the broader significance of Maharashtra's agricultural initiatives. The discussions positively focused on making the agriculture value chain more robust, inclusive, and sustainable, ensuring long-term benefits for farmers. As Maharashtra moves forward, this visit is poised to play a crucial role in transforming the state's agricultural landscape, leveraging ADB support to implement innovative solutions and drive economic growth in the sector.
