Western Railway Explores Suburban Train Services Between Mumbai and Surat
In a significant development for regional connectivity, Western Railway (WR) is actively exploring the introduction of suburban train-type services between Mumbai and Surat as part of a long-term strategic plan. This initiative aims to cater to the growing demand for commuter-oriented travel along this bustling corridor, which currently relies on existing services like the Virar-Surat mainline electric multiple unit (MEMU) and various long-distance trains.
Infrastructure Upgrades at Surat Station
To facilitate these future operations, Western Railway is set to add two additional platforms at Surat station as part of its ongoing redevelopment project. This enhancement is crucial for accommodating increased train frequency and improving passenger handling capabilities. The redevelopment, valued at Rs 1,477 crore, is progressing steadily, with nearly 45% of the phase 1 work already completed. The target deadline for this project is set for 2027, after which the proposed suburban services are expected to be prioritized.
Advanced Train Options Under Consideration
Officials have indicated that instead of conventional suburban EMU locals, the future services are likely to utilize upgraded MEMU trains. These trains are better suited for longer intercity distances and come equipped with passenger amenities such as toilets, enhancing comfort for commuters. Additionally, the railways is evaluating the possibility of introducing Namo Bharat trains on the Mumbai-Surat route. These trains feature a mix of AC and non-AC coaches and have already been successfully implemented on the Ahmedabad-Bhuj sector, serving as a potential model for this corridor.
Another promising option being explored is the Vande Metro, a self-propelled train designed specifically for short-distance intercity travel. Built on the same platform as the Vande Bharat Express, the Vande Metro has a speed limit of 130kmph, making it more suitable for regional operations compared to the 160kmph-capable Vande Bharat. It is intended to replace existing MEMUs on Indian railways, offering a Metro-like travel experience with both seating and standing options. A 12-coach rake can accommodate approximately 1,150 seated passengers and about 2,058 standing commuters, significantly boosting capacity.

By leveraging advanced train technologies and infrastructure upgrades, Western Railway aims to transform regional mobility, providing a seamless and enhanced travel experience.
