Prayagraj Chilli Exports to Gulf Countries Grind to a Halt Amid West Asia Conflict

The lucrative export of chilli from Prayagraj to Gulf nations has come to a complete standstill due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, delivering a severe blow to local farmers who had painstakingly developed a profitable overseas market over the past several years.

Steady Growth in Exports Now Threatened

Since 2017, farmers from Prayagraj district, particularly those from the Bahadurpur block, have been successfully exporting chilli to countries including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman, with demand showing consistent growth. Between 2019 and 2024, there was a remarkable increase in production, export volume, and earnings.

In 2019, approximately 375 quintals of chilli were exported, generating an income of about Rs 7.5 lakh. This figure climbed significantly to 630 quintals in 2024, with earnings reaching Rs 12.60 lakh. However, in 2025, exports experienced a slight decline to 540 quintals, bringing in Rs 11.88 lakh.

Meticulous Processing and Packaging Standards

Farmers revealed that their produce underwent careful processing and was packed in 5.5 kg and 3.5 kg packets to meet stringent export requirements. Umesh Singh, a farmer from Bahadurpur, explained that an additional 100 grams was included in each packet to compensate for moisture loss during transit.

Singh highlighted that several institutions played a crucial role in training farmers, standardizing packaging, and facilitating access to international markets, which collectively helped boost exports over the years. However, the current geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region have severely disrupted supply chains and halted shipments entirely, leaving farmers anxious about unsold produce and diminishing incomes.

Broader Agricultural Concerns Emerge

"We are already facing significant problems with chilli exports, and the situation could deteriorate further in the coming days," warned Singh. "Many farmers in the Bahadurpur block also export other vegetables, such as okra, and this business is now at risk as sowing is currently underway and uncertainty persists."

Officials Warn of Long-Term Consequences

District Horticulture Officer Saurabh Srivastava cautioned that if international conditions do not stabilize soon, the impact on farmers could extend into the long term. He emphasized the urgent need to explore alternative domestic and international markets to minimize the losses faced by the agricultural community.

The sudden halt in exports underscores the vulnerability of local economies to global geopolitical events, with farmers who invested years in building export relationships now facing an uncertain future.
