Ranchi Airport Adjusts Summer Flight Schedule, Cuts Four Services
Authorities at Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi announced on Saturday a reduction in flight operations under the newly implemented summer schedule. The airport has withdrawn three flights connecting Ranchi to Delhi and one service to Hyderabad, bringing the total daily operations down from 52 to 48 flights.
Airline Decisions Drive Schedule Changes
Airport director Vinod Kumar explained that the adjustments were made by the airlines based on their operational convenience and profitability considerations. "Minor changes were made by the airline as per their convenience and profit aspects," Kumar stated. He further noted that flight schedules are typically rolled out according to seasonal patterns, as passenger footfall fluctuates throughout the year.
The recent crisis affecting IndiGo has contributed significantly to this reduction in flight numbers. The three withdrawn IndiGo flights to Delhi are:
- Flight 6E-6031
- Flight 6E-5139
- Flight 6E-2294
Immediate Impact on Travelers
Online ticket booking platforms showed these flights available for booking on Saturday but removed them from Sunday onward. Similarly, while booking platforms previously displayed three flights to Hyderabad, the new schedule now shows only two available flights on this route from Ranchi.
Unfulfilled Expansion Plans
Director Kumar, who assumed his position in October last year, had previously outlined ambitious plans to expand connectivity from Ranchi. These included adding new destinations, particularly to northeastern regions of India, along with establishing international connectivity. However, these expansion plans have not yet materialized.
"We tried our best to include new destinations," Kumar acknowledged. "The matter was discussed multiple times in recent meetings of the aerodrome committee. But the airline did not come forward to introduce any new destination."
Despite these setbacks, Kumar remains optimistic about future growth prospects. "As the airport has developed with new facilities, we will be trying to introduce more destinations in the future," he affirmed, highlighting the airport's improved infrastructure as a foundation for potential route expansion.
The reduction in flights comes as airports nationwide adjust their schedules to align with seasonal travel patterns and airline operational strategies. Passengers traveling from Ranchi are advised to check updated flight schedules when planning their journeys during the summer months.
