Rishikesh-Karnprayag Rail Line Nears Completion with 72.5% Progress
In a significant development for Uttarakhand's infrastructure, the ambitious 126-kilometer Rishikesh–Karnprayag rail line has achieved 72.5% overall completion, with tunnelling work nearly finished at 95.3%. This update was provided by officials during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in Dehradun on Wednesday.
Focus on Safety and Future Expansion
Chief Minister Dhami emphasized the critical importance of safety in railway projects, directing officials to ensure that all future rail initiatives in the state incorporate escape tunnels alongside main tunnels. These parallel evacuation routes are designed to enhance passenger safety during emergencies. "An action plan should be prepared on how the escape tunnels built under the Rishikesh–Karnprayag project can be utilised in the future," Dhami stated, highlighting the need for proactive planning.
He also instructed officials to examine the feasibility of extending the rail line from Karnprayag to Bageshwar, potentially broadening connectivity in the region. The project currently involves the construction of 28 tunnels, comprising 16 main tunnels and 12 escape tunnels, underscoring a robust approach to infrastructure development.
Themed Railway Stations and Additional Projects
Officials revealed that railway stations along the Rishikesh–Karnprayag route are being developed with unique cultural and religious themes to reflect Uttarakhand's heritage. The stations include:
- Shivpuri (Neelkanth Mahadev)
- Byasi (Maharishi Ved Vyas)
- Devprayag (Samudra Manthan)
- Janasu (Uttarakhand culture)
- Maletha (Veer Madho Singh Bhandari)
- Srinagar (Maa Raj Rajeshwari Devi)
- Dhari Devi (Maa Dhari Devi)
- Tilani (Kedarnath)
- Gholtir (Panch Mahadev)
- Gauchar (Bal Govind Krishna)
- Karnprayag (Badrinath Temple and Radha Krishna)
In parallel, discussions on the proposed Tanakpur–Bageshwar rail line are advancing. Indian Railways has suggested three survey options, with plans being explored to link alternative routes and connect Almora and Someshwar to the proposed corridor. Dhami directed officials to expedite work on this project and consider multiple route options to maximise coverage and public benefit. He added that the state government would urge the Central Government to declare it a national project to accelerate execution.
